To create this unique beer, a team from Beau’s travelled to Fogo Island to brainstorm recipe ideas with chefs from Fogo Island Inn, and to see what locally foraged ingredients would be suited to brewing. Hand-picked partridgeberries (a tart berry native to the island) went into the brew, along with torrified bark from Fogo Island paper birch trees. The wheat malt used in the 49° 54° beer was smoked using Island myrrh (hardened tree sap collected from local fir, spruce and pine). And finally, a touch of brine comes courtesy of sea salt harvested by chefs at Fogo Island Inn and shared with the Beau’s brewing team.

Oh wow! This is quite unique. Pours a lightly hazy golden-orange colour with a frothy warm cap that lasts a while and leaves creamy lace. The nose has burnt wood, so smokey. The malt base is fruity. The taste turns down a little the smokiness, to blend it with the berry notes and hints of salt in the finish. A very interesting berry Gose mixed with a Rauchbier. Maybe not one to drink another right after, but unique and a must try.

On tap at Arrow and Loon. Pours a one finger frothy creamy beige head and has a cloudy orangey appearance. Somewhat excessive carbonation. Lots of thick sticky dirty lacing. Aromas of subtle spices, a little bit of yeast. Flavours are fruity, some spice notes. Not very sour, not as expected but still just enough. Drying mouthfeel with a bit of sour finish. Pretty good.
