Dark ale, fermented in the bottle. Inspired by a Breughel painting, “The Flemish Proverbs” (1559), in which several Flemish proverbs are depicted amongst which is the expression "He’s a pilaarbijter" ("pillar biter"), which means, 'He’s a hypocritical man.'

Somewhat opaque brown with off-white big foam head. Aroma is bit weak (but then I have somewhat of a cold) caramel. Nice taste, some bitter, some caramel, not too sweet. (Gent 201312)

After trying the Petrus Dubbel wich is from the same brewery, I got curious and tried the Pilaarbijter Bruin from draught tonight in my local beerpub. Aroma has hints of candy with caramel and almonds. It looks really good after being draught in it's original glass. Flavour has bits of biscuits with dark herbs like cloves and plums. Kinda bitter aftertaste wich is quite pleasant. The name Pilaarbijter means a hypocritical person in Dutch/Belgium language. Litteral translation means a Pillar biter, and that makes no sense. A good beer, just above average, nice to drink. I start to like this Bavik brewery.

Pours out in a hazy brownish mahogany colour with a rich frothy tan-coloured head. Yeasty aroma of dark cherries, anise and brown sugar. Fruity and yeasty flavour of dark cherries, dates and plums with yeasty notes of mild pepper, brown sugar and fudge. Medium-bodied with a lively carbonation. Spices, dates, cherries, chocolate and brown sugar in the finish that could have been linger a bit longer.

"Dark brown color. Large sized beige foamy head. Aroma is malty, caramel, sweet and a touch earthy. Medium bodied Belgian ale. Malts are a fruity and sweet, but not with the usual fruity ester one would expect in a Belgian. Yeasty and highly carbonated. Very drinkable, but not a good representation of the style. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is sweet. "

Bottled. Brown colour with beige head. Leaves some slight lace. Aroma is caramel, spices and some fruits. Quite strong zest coming through. Flavour is sweet malts with spices, herbs and some fruits. Also some candyish sweetness noteable, which bothers me a bit in the flavour. Otherwise a rather nice beer.
