A pumpkin ale that bucks the trend. Some might think we’re out of our gourd for making a pumpkin ale, but our Pumpkin Down is not like the others. The caramel and toffee maltiness of our Piper Down Scottish ale is the perfect backdrop for a boatload of roasted pumpkin. Just before bottling, we add a subtle amount of spice to complement, but not overwhelm, the earthy flavor. It was a smash at the brewery, and we think you’ll agree.

Pours clear chestnut with a thick, if not long-lasting, buff head. Aroma has a strong pumpkin overtone plus notes of cinnamon, caramel and toasted malt. Flavor delights the palate by trotting pumpkin, cinnamon, cloves, caramel and malty tones over the tongue, while fruity and hoppy snippets occasionally pop up. Mouthfeel does not present anything spectacular, but body and fizz are OK and finish has nice caramel and earthy tones. Get down and pumpkin-y!

Another nice beer from Ballast Point. Spiced Ales are not my favorite but I will usually have one or two different ones during the Fall and Winter Seasons. This one was unique because the base beer is a scottish ale. The spice paired well with it. It has a darker red color and a heavy body traditional of the Scottish Ales. The spices typically found in pumpkin ales are used here - not overly sweet, the spices complement the style. Well done.
