Inspired by Battle Axe Butte southeast of Phoenix, this beer tastes as rugged as its namesake. The base of this beer is a high gravity Imperial Stout with oats, lactose sugar from the United Dairymen of Arizona and Medjool Dates from Steadfast Farm. We then aged this huge stout in Laphroaig barrels for a few months.

Batch 2. Slim 12oz can pours with a nice deep dark chocolate mahogany colored body that supports a thin ring of tan bubbles. The aroma offers up chocolate flowing into subtle boozy barrel treatment and a sense of dark fruity esters. The taste delivers chocolate like notes mingling deeply with dark roasted malts. To midway the tangy barrel treatment comes along in a mild manner adding more depth as the modest booziness rises toward the finish. The barrel treatment only offers mild to even subtle smoky peatiness, unfortunately. I could really go for a bigger barrel treatment. This isn't nearly as intense as the first batch. It is, however, opening up some as it warms. I dig it.

March 2018: On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Pitch black colour, moderate tan head. Strong aroma of peat smoke (Laphroaig Scotch whisky) and roast malts. Medium sweet flavour, some lactose and dates, roast malts, intense notes of peat smoke, too much peat for me.
