Sample from bottle at Copenhagen Beer Celebration. Pitch black colour, brown head. Very roasty aroma, notes of coffee and dark chocolate. The flavour is very sweet and very roasty, notes of coffee and molasses.

25 cl bottle, under its alias "Scaldis" Caractère, bought at Selfridge’s, London. Amber colour, large and fluffy lingering head. Vinous dry sherry-like aroma, elements of oak and leather too. Flavour is again sherry-like, medium dry (or medium sweet, if you like), loads and loads of oak, hints of German "Weinbrand", warming mouthfeel as expected from a 12% ABV beer, but the beer doesn’t feel inappropriately alcoholic. A substantial hoppy bitterness in the finish balances the sweetness nicely. Plays in the Premier League of beers, this one.

750 ml stylish "champagne" bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Amber to brown colour, large cream-coloured head. Nice vinous aroma, notes of oak and "fruits of the forest", hints of farmhouse. Vinous, oaky and well balanced flavour with moderate but sufficient hops. Extremely drinkable for its strength.

440 ml can, from Rema 1000 Tau. ABV is 4.6%. Brewed by Brooklyn Stockholm Opco for Brooklyn Brewery. Golden colour, moderate white head. Moderate aroma of citric hops, a hint of pine. Citric and piney flavour, did not blow my socks off.

Rerate, 750 ml bottle, batch #1759, from Vinmonopolet Jørpeland. ABV is 7.0%. Reddish amber to brown colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma of malts, some of them lightly roasted. A hint of dark berries in the background. Malty flavour, only a very moderate sweetness, some caramel. A slight fruitiness of berries helps the drinkability. Moderate but noticeable bitterness. Okay. I'm upping the score a bit. Original rating: Sample at Nærbø Ølfestival. Deep golden brown colour. Fairly roasty and malty aroma and flavour, rather dry. Will rerate when I get a full bottle, or a larger sample on tap.

Shared 500 ml gusher bottle at local tasting. Nearly black colour, large off-white head. Dryish and "thin" smokey aroma, notes of smoked meat, woody hints too. Too much carbonation. Smokey and dry flavour too, mild roasty notes in the background.

500 ml bottle, as 8 Wired Super Conductor Double IPA, from the Norwegian importer. ABV is 8.8%. Crystal clear golden colour, apparently filtered. Moderate white head. Intense aroma of fruity NZ and US hops, a remarkable blend of lychee and other tropical fruits, citrus and white grapes. Also hints of spruce and caramel. The flavour is very hoppy, fruity, resinous and bitter, but also quite sweet. Far from "perfectly balanced", but still damned good and tasty.

330 ml bottle, from Ales By Mail. ABV is 10.0%. Pitch black colour, moderate brown head. Aroma of roast malts, coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, exotic woodwork. Rich mouthfeel. The medium sweet flavour is roasty with notes of strong coffee and dark bitter chocolate, some vanilla, and distinct bittering hops. Impressive.

Strong roasty and salty aroma, notes of tar, seaside and old rope, hints of smoke, also notes of oak / vanilla and coffee as expected. The flavour is fairly dry and very roasty with distinct notes of coffee, hints of smoke and oak / vanilla.

750 ml corked & caged bottle, as Poma Áurea Brut Nature Sidra de Asturias. Vintage 2018, ABV is 6.5%. From Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. Crystal clear and very pale yellow colour, pours sparkling with a large but shortlived head. Aroma of apples, damp cellar, white bread, a hint of sulphites. Light bodied. The flavour is dry, notes of apples, a hint of sulphites. Refreshing, must also be good with food.

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Cloudy brown colour, creamy beige head. Lovely aroma of Australian hops, notes of tropical fruits and fir needles. Intense flavour of hops throughout, again with notes of tropical fruits and grapefruit, fir and pine needles and resin. There is a sufficient malty backbone, but not much sweetness. The bitterness is firm, but not too extreme. Jolly good.

Luscious hoppy flavour, with notes of bitter orange marmalade, grapefruit, mango and resin. In other words: Lots of hoppy flavours in addition to the expected solid bitterness, which is still not to extreme. A wonderful beer!

The well balanced flavour has notes of citrussy and resinous hops throughout, but is not too bitter. Also spicy notes (coriander). An excellent fusion between witbier and IPA, dangerously drinkable.

Warming mouthfeel, The flavour is heavily roasty, notes of very strong coffee and dark bitter chocolate, not very sweet. A solid hoppy and roasty bitterness in the finish.

Christmas seasonal. 500 ml bottle, from Det Gode brygg, Sandnes. ABV is 4.7%. Chestnut to mahogany colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma of malts, caramel, brittle, brown bread and Christmas spices. The flavour has the same elements as the aroma, but is not too sweet. Very moderate hops. Pleasant to drink.

500 ml bottle conditioned, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.5%. Black colour, moderate tan head. Lovely aroma of citrussy hops, on a background of moderately roasted malts, hints of dark chocolate. The medium dry flavour has again citrussy hops, blended with distinct roasted malts, notes of strong coffee, dark bitter chocolate and resin. The contradictory "Black IPA" style is beginning to grow on me, and this one is a fine specimen.

330 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet Kvadrat. ABV is 6.8%. Hopped with a blend of European, North American and New Zealand varieties. Deep golden colour, large white head. Aroma of citrussy hops, especially mandarin, also some catty hints, and some crystal malts. Smooth mouthfeel, moderate carbonation in the glass. The lightly sweet flavour is distinctly hoppy throughout, with a grapefruity bitterness, also hints of pine needles.

Nice aroma of fruity American hops, piney hints too. Hoppy flavour, medium dry, nice enough, but not as much depth as desirable. Still decent enough to buy again.
