1878 | Southern Tier Imperial Choklat Stout | United States | Imperial Stout | 4.1
Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8 650ml bottle
9.5% ABV (as written on the bottle)
Milton LCBO Outlet #1 (Milton, Ontario, Canada)
October 18, 2010
The beer poured a solid black with a foamy brown coloured head that lasted throughout. The aroma was dark chocolate, roasted malt. coffee, and molasses. The mouthfeel was full bodied, and creamy with medium carbonation. The flavour was bitter dark chocolate, some coffee, lots of roasted malt. This is a huge whallop of chocolate in a beer, maybe too much of a whallop because I'll take the Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout over this any day. |

1895 | BrewDog Paradox Edition 016 Isle of Arran | United Kingdom | Imperial Stout | 4.0
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 330ml bottle
10.0% ABV
The Beerbistro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
August 26, 2010
This is the Beer Idol beer. I'm not not into beer caps, so it doesn't really matter to me, but I didn't want my 'Beer idol beer' to be a Molson Canadian 67. The beer poured a solid dark brown colour with a bubbly tan coloured head. The aroma was dark fruits, roasted malt, coffee, and vanilla. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, with medium carbonation...but thin for an Imperial Stout. The flavour was coffee, roasted malt, some caramel, and some vanilla. It's obviously a popular choice amongst the wait staff because every single one of them has made a positive comment about the beer as they've passed by. |

The aroma was overwhelmingly anise with roasted malt, coffee, and caramel all taking a back seat. The mouthfeel was full-bodied and creamy. The flavour was again roiasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate.....and anise. I'm not a huge licorice fan, so the power of the anise took away from the enjoyment of this beer, but anise aside, a solid effort. |
