676 MacKinnon Brothers Crosscut Canadian Ale Canada Blonde Ale 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

473ml can
5.2% ABV
Canned On: February 5, 2019
LCBO #457 (Toronto, Ontario, Canada - Yonge / Eglinton)
April 15, 2019
$3.05
The beer pours a hazed medium gold colour with a very thin white film for a ring. Effervescence is active. The aroma is grainy malt, some light fruit notes, yeast, and earthy hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, crisp, with average carbonation. The flavour has more in common with a Nortgh American blonde ale than it does with either an English Pale Ale or an American pale Ale. Quite grainy with a slightly sweet start leading to a bitter finish. Aside from the grains and the hops, not a lot of complexity here.

677 MacKinnon Brothers 8 Man English Pale Ale Canada English Pale Ale 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

473ml can
5.8% ABV
Canned ON: February 5, 2019
LCBO #457 (Toronto, Ontario, Canada - Yonge / Eglinton)
April 14, 2019
$3.05
The beer pours a translucent copper colour with a thin white film for a head. Effervescence is decent. The aroma is caramel, biscuit malt, light musty hops, and yeast. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is well balanced with caramel malt, spicy hop, and grains. There is nothing outstanding about this beer, but it is a very good example of a North American take on an EPA.

678 Flying Monkeys Live Transmission Canada IPA 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

473ml can
6.30% ABV
Canned On: December 28, 2018
LCBO # 255 (Milton, Ontario, Canada – Main / Bronte)
April 13, 2019
$3.15
The beer pours a hazed medium gold colour with a thin white head which sits on the top for a while. The aroma is tropical fruit, grass, light spices, and herbal hop notes. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is sweet fruit, grains, yeast, and citrus peel. I smell no coconut, and I taste no coconut. Yet the can claims it is there. Despite that, this was a good tasting beer!

679 Flying Monkeys Sparklepuff Canada Imperial IPA 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

473ml can
10.2% ABV
Canned On: March 21, 2019
LCBO # 255 (Milton, Ontario, Canada – Main / Bronte)
April 12, 2019
$4.95
This is a chunky pour. The colour is medium gold, more murky than hazy, with a huge white head which recedes to a creamy film. The aroma is very peachy with notes of grass, light spices, and tropical fruits. The mouthfeel is full bodied with average carbonation. The first thing I taste is alcohol, followed by bitter citrus ring, grass, and finally the peaches come through in the finish. I want to like it, but the alcohol bitterness is hanging around too long.

680 Grand River Beam Me Up Canada Scottish Ale 2.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

Scottish Ale 473ml can
6.2% ABV
Canned On: March 21, 2019
LCBO #457 (Toronto, Ontario, Canada - Yonge / Eglinton)
April 13, 2019
$3.40
The beer pours a translucent reddish brown colour with a thick tan coloured head that lasts several minutes. The aroma is roasted malt, molasses, nuts, and herbal hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is a tad on the bitter side. It starts off sweet, but the bitterness overpowers it by the time it reaches the throat. So, a tad thin for a Wee Heavy and a little too bitter for the style.

(Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
April 5, 2019
$7.74
The beer pours a very dark brown, almost black, with a long lasting creamy light brown head. Lots of lacing as this goes down. The aromas are roasted malt, chocolate, nuts, and light coffee hints. The mouthfeel is medium boed with average carbonation. The flavour was milk chocolate, roasted malt, and there were peppery spicy notes in the finish, but that may have been from my lunch. All in all a good beer.

473ml aluminum bottle
5.2% ABV
Canned On: March 18, 2019
LCBO # 255 (Milton, Ontario, Canada – Main / Bronte)
April 4, 2019
$3.25
The beer pours a translucent medium gold colour with plenty of effervescence and a foamy white head which doesn’t last very long. The aroma is grainy malt, maybe a hint of biscuits in there, along with herbal hop notes. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation (despite the excess effervescence). The flavour is very malty with some subtle sweetness at the start giving way to a twinge of bitter hops in the finish. Nothing offensive here, but not worth reaching for again.

690 Innis & Gunn Limited Edition Kindred Spirits United Kingdom Stout 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

The aroma was burnt wood, molasses, whiskey, and roasted malt. The mouthfeel was full bodied with above average carbonation. The flavour lacks the punch of the aroma with notes of roasted malt, some bitter soy sauce notes, dark chocolate, and minor hints of burnt wood and whiskey. While I’m not a fan of in your face barrel aged beers, I do expect there to be some barrel character and this has it, but not enough of it.

(Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
March 29, 2019
$11.73
The beer pours a mahogany colour with clear edges and a thin brown head. Eventually, it appeared more like a brownish cream soda colour. The aroma was Belgian yeast, roasted malt, candy sugar, and dark fruit. The mouthfeel was medium to full bodied, and highly carbonated. The flavour was plums and raisins, burnt sugar, and roasted malt notes. An excellent Canadian version of an Belgian Quadrupel

Maybe things are different in Virginia, but this beer falls short of the Imperial Stout on every beer web site. The beer pours black with a huge frothy brown head which doesn’t last very long. The aroma is roasted malt, coffee, and weak hints of dark chocolate. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate. The beer is very one dimensional.

The aroma is roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, and some licorice notes. The mouthfeel is full bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is similar to the aroma with lots of coffee and roasted malt character. The brewery calls this a Baltic Porter but there really isn’t anything Baltic about it. As a Baltic Porter it fails, but as a Porter it is great!

750ml bottle
10.3% ABV
Bottled On: June 6, 2017
LCBO #457 (Toronto, Ontario, Canada – Yonge / Eglinton)
March 23, 2019
$21.95
2015 Edition, Bottled in 2017 after aging. The beer pours a turbid Indian red colour with a short lived (and by short lived I mean seconds) white cap. The ring around the edge does last forever though. The aroma is tart chrries, yeast, sour grains, and an unrecognizable funky smell. The mouthfeel is puckering, medium to full bodied, with ample amounts of carbonation. The flavour is both very tart, and very fruity. The cherries aren’t as pronounced in the flavour as they are in the aroma but still there. Some grains and yeast are also present but this is a very sour beer. As previously stated, this is nowhere near quad like in what we have to think of is a quad. But it is quite good.
