Bread crust and ripe dark fruit in the nose. Dark copper body with low transparency minimal head with very little retention and little if any lace. Mouth is medium body slightly creamy slick and filling. Flavor is biscuit and blackberry syrup with some candy apple quite sweet but with a surprisingly clean finish.

2 St. Bernardus Abt 12 Belgium Abbey Quadrupel 5.0

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 10 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10

Big nose .... raisins, brown sugar, vanilla, oak, whisky. Gentle pour produces a 3-4 finger head that is caramel colored with solid retention and great lace over a deep chocolate brown body that is nearly opaque. Mouth has great tingle with spot on carbonation...... medium bodied and nicely slick. So much going on flavor-wise. Plum, prune, coffee, bitter chocolate, followed by hints of fruit punch, ends with a hint of sour and, although alcohol well masked for 10%, a slight warming. Finish is long and quite clean. Neither sweet nor sour, with a hint of bitterness this is just perfectly balanced! Previous high score for some excellent brews from me is around 4.3 but if this isn't a 5 I don't know what could be. Simply perfection in a glass.

3 Southampton Abbot 12 United States Abbey Quadrupel 4.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Reviewed as night cap to a VERY long 4th of July so take with a grain of salt. This is a fantastic nose, winey and spicy, with serious carmel and malt scents and very nice hoppy spicyness; a very big nose with retention. Pours a serious greyish head that does not linger which sits over a foggy copper body. Mouthfeel is rich, heavy and full with nice carbonation. Flavor is sweet and surprisingly uncomplicated; lots of brown sugar/carmel flavor with some ripe fruit, perhaps fig, and a small hint of hops bitterness. Alcohol is totally masked. Somehow they have pulled off a very clean and dry finish which is a bit of a shock. Overall is hard to grade; this beer is not complex in the sense of developing various flavors but it excellently balanced throughout and the finish is just amazing; a major brew!

4 Ommegang Three Philosophers United States Abbey Quadrupel 4.2

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Reviewing from day old memory. Great head, none better ...beige, thick, foamy and alive. A head that lasts forever and leaves magnificent lace with a dark dark brown body underneath. Nose of fruit and spice and malt...complex and delightful. Mouthfeel is thick yet clean, slippery and tingly. Flavor is complex, toasty malts, heavy fruit, spice and some alcohol, for a sweet beer it finishes fairly dry. This beer is a home run.

5 Lagunitas Were Only In It For The Money United States Abbey Tripel 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

winey nose typical for the style, lots of grape and lots of malt, very sweet nose with just a touch of hops citrus. Meidum amber body below a small white head, very little lacing. Mouth is full and sticky. Flavor is big, hits fruity then goes very earthy with fig and sweet raw malty notes, goes very bitter and sour near the end and finishes with an alcohol warmth and an interesting peppery aftertaste. A heavy brew!

6 Unibroue La Fin du Monde Canada Abbey Tripel 4.3

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Very nicely done! Poured in a flute, ala Hefe style, a great head with a wonderful nose of spice, biscuit, peppers, anice, an overwhelming nose, that sits ontop of a foggy deep gold body; excellent. Nice mouthfeel, medium and fizzy as should be. For its style the flavor is delicate, lots of fruit and grape notes but a solid malt body, tastes a cross between a Hefe and a Saison, just really nice, tart and earthy with deep fruit. This is an excellent beer, very well done!

7 Uerige Doppel Sticke Germany Altbier 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Grapes and figs in the nose along with serious citrusy hops. Very dark amber body with minimal head and lace. Very fullish slippery mouth, flavor is sweet carmelized sugar at first hit followed by anice, pears, raisins, pepper and a strong sour and bitter finish, after taste of piney hops.

8 Long Trail Brewing Double Bag United States Altbier 3.7

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Mild hops nose; pine, orange peel, pepper, and carmel candy. Minimal to almost no head, whats there is beige and tightly knit. Leaving a very small but distinctive lave that withdraws downt he side of the glass like surf retreating from the beach, leaving only very small dots behind. All that sitting on top of a classically copper-colored body with a lot of transparency. Mouth feel is silky and suprsingly tingly in spite of the visual absense of carbonation. A full and balanced flavor starts piney hops and goes quickly to yeast and then toasty carmel malts with a significant grain presence. The finish is dry with alcohol predominating the aftertaste, and prehaps a bit of chemical in the aftertaste as well. I would rate this sticke altbeer a bit higher if the aftertaste was more pleasant.

9 Long Trail Brewing Ale United States Altbier 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

nose is all malt with vanilla and hints of butterscotch and earth. A thick white head with good retention and very good lacing sits atop a clear pale amber body. Mouth is creamy and medium bodied, flavor has a lot of malt/bread upfront, with a hint of hops and perhaps some cherries or other ripe fruit lending a midtaste sweetness, finish is just a touch bitter and quite clean with a tart aftertaste. This is a well crafted beer true to the altbier style though perhaps a touch under-hopped.

10 Pinkus Organic Münstersch Alt Germany Altbier 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

Aroma reminiscent of a Brown ale, slightly funky (they always remind me of tennis balls) some vanilla and some peppery and citrusy hop notes with just a touch of biscuit. Great rocky head is large and pure white with moderate retention and fantastic lace, sits atop a slightly fogged (organic) medium golden body with a hint of copper. This beer has a lovely mouthfeel, thick and slippery and a bit chewy with nice tingle from well done carbonation. OK, now that I have reveiwed it I have read the other reviews of people who I respect like ECB and Hannah and Eaglefan and others. I do agree that the color may not be right for style but I am shocked by the low reviews it has received, I am going to have to get another soon and drink it cold to see if that is the difference or perhaps there is a lack of consistency. I am drinking this on the warm side which I suspect is appropriate. The taste if very round and mellow, excellent balance! Starts tart, almost fermented pear with significant hop notes of pepper and citrus, there is a very mild carmel note, it is not grassy, yeast is big in mid-taste but is not sour: somehow it has a very deep mellowness to it, there is bread and malt and vanilla towards the end which is mellowing the yeast flavor I think, and it ends dry and slightly tart with significant warming effect of alcohol. This beer is very complex but so well balanced that the complexity is hard to notice, yes I am in Love! (and it it priced very well IMHO).

11 Otter Creek Copper Ale United States Altbier 3.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Mild nose mostly carmel malts with a hint of spicy hops. Clear copper body is topped with a minimal, short lived head that leaves a tiny lace, the carbonation seems almost soda fizzy up the sides of the glass but does not seem to produce any additional head. Mouth is thin, watery and a touch flat in terms of carbonation. Taste is better then it looks. Lots of really nice malt, slightly sweet with hints of coffee and carmel and a touch of smoke, almost a light Rauchbier flavor. Minimal hop flavor balances the sweetness nicely with a bright high note in mid taste and their is a touch of grass towards the end and a slightly butter and vanilla finish. This is VERY drinkable, I wish the appearance was better attended to and the fizzy quality was dealt with.

12 River Horse Special Ale United States Amber Ale 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

IT APPEARS THIS IS NOT THE SAME BEER (just the same name and brewer) that has been previously reviewed here, it is now called an American Amber Ale. (I think its more an Irish Red than anything.) Nice nose, toasted malt predominates, some chocolate and coffee notes, light citrus brings up the rear. Medium copper body is foggy and topped with a tan moderate head with good retention and decent lace. Mouth is medium to light and slightly chewy, carbonation a well done tickle. This beer is sweet and tart. Not complex but nicely balanced. Some chocolate, some coffee from the malts, sweet but not cloying, hops just detectable but contribute to a surprisingly dry and clean finish. This sucker is pretty well made and it is what it is. Extremely sessionable!

13 Rogue Santas Private Reserve Ale United States Amber Ale 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Some spice and malt in nose, but nose is faint, Decent copper color over nice head with good retention and not much lace. VERY dry in the mouth, not sure of the spicing but its like they suck the moisture out of your mouth, not unlike alum. Mouth is VERY thin. I'm not a fan of this flavor, mostly musty and drying. Not my cup of tea but hey, Rogue doesn't usually intend to appeal to the masses. Very hoppy bitter a bit of malt

14 Blue Point Spring Fling Ale United States Amber Ale 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Very ale like in appearance and flavor, this lager pours a deep copper clear body with a thin off white head that has moderate retention and no lace. Ale like nose of carmel malt and spicy hops. Medium bodied mouth is nicely carbonated. Tastes like a copper or brown ale, lots of carmel, a touch sweet, finish is fairly dry. Not complex, no standard lager flavors, good session brew.

15 City Steam Naughty Nurse United States Amber Ale 3.0

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Was looking for a Thanksgiving afternoon beer to set me up while I cook before serving the bird and the Saisons and thought I'd give this a try. Aroma is sweet malt and citrus, orange detected. Pours a medium copper body with minimal off white head and some lacing. Mouth is Ok, a bit under-carbonated and a bit thin. The Crystal malt is cloying with some carmel undertones. Has a bitter hit in the middle and finishes a bit too sweet. Drinkable sort of.

16 Samuel Adams Boston Ale United States Amber Ale 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Pretty malty nose with q touch of spice and some carmel sweetness. Pours a palish copper body that is crystal clear with a large off-white head that leaves excellent lace. Mouth is medium to full with minimal but ok carbonation. Flavor would be great except for a metallic aftertaste. tons of malt and biscuit in the mouth, a little sweet honey/brown sugar and a small hops bite in mid taste. I think its the hops though, that are leaving a slightly grassy chemical aftertaste. Its upsetting becuase I really like the flavor profile up to that point.

17 Redhook CopperHook Spring Ale United States Amber Ale 2.9

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Lots of yeast in the nose with a touch of floral hops. Moderate head with short retention and light lace over a pale copper body. Mouth is a touch watery. Flavor is very timid, not complex but well balanced caramel notes with a good malt body and slight hops bite at the end. this is a hard beer to review, poor in many ways but it would be a great beer to give to a friend that only likes macros. And if you ever feel like a light beer, this would be a good choice as well. Its numbers are going to come out low but for wither of the previous situations this beer would be first rate.

Rerate 7/2021 Mild nose of malt not really a lot going on there. Cloudy copper / orange body pores almost no head and no lace. Mouth is slightly watery with a bit of a tingle. Flavor is malt forward possibly Crystal malts a bit sweet certainly not complex a hint of bitter and the Finish you could probably drink a lot of this it reminds me of McSorley's.

19 Unrefined Brown Shugga United States American Barleywine 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Mild nose... Raisin, cotton candy, fresh cut grass. Deep copper body thin off white head, reasonable lace for the ABV. Moderate to low carbonation, slick on the mouth, medium body. Fairly subtle flavor for its style. Black cherry, brown sugar but sweet well balanced with coffee tones a very long finish that is a bit of stringent and nicely bittered. Tasty is always from Lagunitas.

20 Come Hell Or High Water United States American Barleywine 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Lot of dough in the nose, some citrus, red raspberry. Cloudy dark honey body with solid off white head leaves a good skim coat and a bit of lace. Nice mouth slippery, full, a bit creamy, nice tingle. Alcohol is present and warming, nicely sweet with the honey without being cloying. Hops are herbal. This cleans up well in the end leaving the mouth slightly sweet and a bit coated with a little bitter in the back of the roof and a gentle booze burn. This tastes way too good and goes down way too easy!

Ok, reviewing from memory after an afternoon on the Hudson starting with Brown Sugga, followed by Hampton Double White, and ending with DogFishHead 120 minute, amazing I can still type! Beautiful beer! Nice carmel head with dark brown body and good lace. Toasted malts and carmel in the nose, nicely done. Full thick mouthfeel. Lots of toasted carmel malt backbone in the taste with suprsing amount of hops bitternes, really well balanced, alcohol really well masked, great beer!

22 Dogfish Head Immort Ale United States American Barleywine 4.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Nose is lemmon, pepper, lavender, and fresh backed bread ... complicated and balanced, real nice. Pours a thick forthy beige head with moderate endurance and real good lacing. A deep copper body lurks beneath with continuing effervesance moving up to restore the lace. For some reason, personal I guess, I find hte color slightly off-putting. Mouthfeel is VERY slippery, creamy and tingly ... again VERY nice. Taste is spot on for type, winey, layered, complicated, and balanced. It hits very sweet, I suspect crystal malts and toasted malts, a bit of caramel flavors in that initial taste. It follows with a nice floral hoppy bite, an astringency, and a significant presence of alcohol in the midtatste. That is followed with a lavender and citrus flavor and stronger caramel flavors. End taste is sugar, almost like icing but with a hint of tartness. Aftertaste is suprisingly clean for this ale and i get an intersting pear flavor. I find this to be a very good ale but if sweetness bothers you then this one's not for you. I would liek to try this with a real good stinky cheese course, I suspect it would be fantastic!

23 Clown Shoes Hoppy Feet 1.5 Double Black India Pale Ale United States American Black Ale 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Pine and citrus in the nose with a hint of chocolate/roasted malts. Pours pretty near cole black body with moderate redish brown head with Ok retention and OK lace; fairly impressive for the abc. Look an awful lot like a good stout. Mouth is a little creamy but slightly on the thin side of medium bodied. Flavor has a belgium fruit funk going on, a bit winey and sweet/sourish with hints of toffee or chocolate from the roasted bill. I am curious about the yeast in this one. Very bitter finish and just something at the end that is not quire right, tad medicinal. Interesting brew!

Some strange fruit in the nose, trouble placing it.... a musty dank nose with lots of burnt grain notes, maybe some vanilla. Dark brown body with moderate beige head, bit of retention and not much lace. Mouth is medium bodied, carbonation is minimal but fine. Flavor is complex, some cotton candy, some prune, some deep espresso, pretty nice. Alcohol very well masked.
