1 St. Bernardus Abt 12 Belgium Abbey Quadrupel 5.0

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 10 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10

Big nose .... raisins, brown sugar, vanilla, oak, whisky. Gentle pour produces a 3-4 finger head that is caramel colored with solid retention and great lace over a deep chocolate brown body that is nearly opaque. Mouth has great tingle with spot on carbonation...... medium bodied and nicely slick. So much going on flavor-wise. Plum, prune, coffee, bitter chocolate, followed by hints of fruit punch, ends with a hint of sour and, although alcohol well masked for 10%, a slight warming. Finish is long and quite clean. Neither sweet nor sour, with a hint of bitterness this is just perfectly balanced! Previous high score for some excellent brews from me is around 4.3 but if this isn't a 5 I don't know what could be. Simply perfection in a glass.

2 Ayinger Bairisch Pils Germany Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 4.6

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10

Perfect pils aroma... Lemon zest, fresh cut grass, maybe a hint of almond extract. Pours a very clear pale gold with a decent head that doesn't have much staying power and leaves no lace. Great mouth.. tingly slippery and clean, slightly light body. Pills flavor doesn't get any better than this.. tart, a little bit of must, slightly astringent towards the end, perfectly bittered and perfectly balanced. And some lemon rind and fresh grass the super clean finish.

3 De Proef By Udder Means Belgium Milk Stout 4.6

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Nose of black licorice, oatmeal, tootsie tool, and grapes. Black and opaque motor oil pour leaves a head that lasts forever and is creamy and caramel/ruby tinged. Fantastic lace, I hesitate to taste cause it looks so pretty! Mouth is creamy and full with perfect carbonation. Taste is simple, which may actually be hard to do. Licorice, milkshake, nice buttering finish, dry yet creamy in the end. Dark roasted malts. Balance? Hell yes, this thing could work the high wire for Cirque! Probably the best stout I have ever had, at least for those under 10 abv.

4 White Birch Hop Session Ale United States American Pale Ale 4.5

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

Nose of vanilla, cookie dough, and a balance of citrus and pine from the hops. Brewed in small batches and unfiltered (this bottle was brewed a month ago) it presents a slightly foggy honey gold body with a nice white head that is frothy with excellent retention and decent lace. This sucker has a wonderful mouth on it, slippery with wonderful carbonation its medium bodied. Flavor...what can I say, PERFECTION, and I have had a lot of APA's. Hop-heads (and I am one) might complain but there is a ton of hoppy goodness in here but it is perfectly balanced. Very solid malt backbone and an absolutely clean dry finish..the magic here is that it presents as sweet and yet not sweet. The perception is of a sweet IPA but its only for an instant and then gone..magical indeed. Hop notes, like the nose, are balanced (and I suppose thats where the "Anglo" in the name comes in) between resiny and citrusy, hitting slightly sweet and citrusy and the start and finishing with an absolutely clean bitterness leaving the mouth entirely clean. I've got 15 minutes to get to the store and clean them out, this stuff is AMAZING!

5 AleSmith IPA United States IPA 4.5

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Big pine and citrus in the nose. Medium amber body that is not quite clear, topped by a nice frothy head with good retention and and decent of lace. Mouth is clean, soft, slippery, medium bodied with nice carbonation. There is an exception perceived bitterness here at 73 IBU. A surprisingly solid malt backbone on this one that hints at toasted grains. Finish is wet and clean. This an excellently balanced. Alcohol slightly present. Grapefruit and orange on the font end, lovely spot on IPA. Might well be the standard against which all other Left Coast IPA's should be judged.

6 Relic Brewing The Lee Shore United States IPA 4.5

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Wheat, neutral fruity notes, touch of grass in the nose. Beautiful foggy pale gold body with excellent long lasting head and nice lace, suspect this may not be filtered. Lots of yeast in the bottom of the can. Mouth is clean as hell, medium bodied, perfect carbonation. Very fond of this brew. Pretty sure this is a wheat IPA, no info on the website. Its just clean and excellently balanced. The hops start citrus, nice malt sweetness in the middle with a solid malt backbone, not supper hop head brew. Finish has a tiny hint of sour and the fruit is really forward. Aftertaste is super dry and clean. Alcohol slightly present and warming. REALLY GOOD STUFF!!!!!

7 Neversink Wheat United States Witbier 4.5

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 10

Tobacco and juniper and orange in the subtle nose. (They call this a botanical wheat and its got spent botanicals from their gin producing partner.) Medium sunny gold fully fogged body topped with a lasting white head that leaves a nice skim coat and a hint of lace. I like this mouth, its a bit foamy, hints at creamy, slightly slick and clean. I do feel like the hummingbird sucking from a flower on the label of the can. This is floral and mellow and dryish. At the end there more than a hint of bitters from the botanicals and just a hint of floral sweetness but the finish is quite clean. I am really enjoying this one from my little known and relatively local brewers. On a hot summer day this is lovely!

8 Weihenstephaner Korbinian Germany Doppelbock 4.5

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Nose: raisins, creme brulee, clove and banana faintly present. Appearance: opaque deep brown body topped with a long-lasting beige head with nice lace. Mouth: Fizzy for sure, clean with medium body plays strongly on the back of the tongue. Flavor: Damn this is tasty! Light coffee and sweet cacao in the front. Esters and phenols are present but very minimal..... I love this balance. Creme brulee really coming out as it warms slightly. Alcohol very well masked but slightly warming in the middle of the taste. Very very long finish which starts slightly sweet but really ends clean. Could be my new favorite brew.

9 Victory Mad Kings Weisse United States Hefeweizen 4.4

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Nose: Banana, Orange, Honey, Cookie Dough Appearance: Huge everlasting egg whites head covers a pale, slightly hazed, gold body that continually effervesces. SPOT ON FOR STYLE!!! Mouth: Medium bodied, slick, tingly Flavor: Best American here I've had. Well balanced and hits all the proper notes. The banana, clove routine is, unlike most US Heffe's, understated, nicely grassy at the end and just a bit more hops bitterness than expected, but I like! Finish is slightly sweet and alrighty sour.

10 Wachusett Larry Imperial IPA United States Imperial IPA 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Long lasting nose, bread, tropical fruit, tobacco, cotton candy. Very warm amber body is slightly hazed and pours a big long-lasting white head with some lace. Mouth is full for an IPA but nice, slick and bit creamy. Flavor is totally there, tropical fruit, conn ton candy, tobacco, quite bitter, orange rind, alcohol there and warming. I think this beer has been redone since previous reviews, more IBU and more ABV, more flavor.

Simply amazing nose...green and honey and violets and peach, long lasting and strong. Light gold body with a white head with fair retention and no lace. Medium to thick mouth, nice coating yet clean. Can you say alcohol masked! This is just dangerously drinkable. Not super bitter, lovely malt backbone. Wildflowers and honey, not tart not sweet not cloying hint of stone fruit and pith, herbal, touch of pine. WOW! This is the best DIPA I have had.

12 Goose Island Bourbon County Stout United States Imperial Stout 4.4

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Nose: Brown sugar, raisin, black cherry, sage or oregano in the background. Pitch black body, small short-lived deep tan head with no lace. Lovely on the mouth...creamy, slippery, full, slight tingle, low carbonation. Bit of a sugar bomb or it would get 10 on flavor. Drinking the 2020 will revisit this same vintage in a few years, maybe the sweet will mellow. So ... molasses, warming alcohol, dark cherry, walnut, clean earth, fairly clean finish.

13 Back Pasture United States Lager 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 10

Lovely pils nose. Fresh! (caned 8 days ago after 6 weeks conditioning in a foeder and around 22 weeks lagering) pasture and sour fruit , and a wiff of bubble gum. P Louise Whitehead leaving a bit of lace sits atop I'm almost clear medium Amber body Anthony. Wonderful creamy mouth chewy and slick and perfect carbonation. The flavor profile is blowing me away. Probably the best lager I've ever had. Complex yet extremely well-balanced and just a hint of sour which I think comes from the conditioning an unusually large wooden barrels. There's a little sweet towards the end with a nice sour in the middle the malts are present the Hops are subtle and probably Noble.

Aroma is faint, very bready, a hint of baking spices. Pours a lovely deep golden brown body with a off-white foamy head that has great retention and lace. Mouth is fizzy in a pleasant way, slightly creamy and clean. My first Hefe that is Dunkel and I like it a lot! The banana, clove, bubblegum flavors are quite laid back and just excellently balanced with the sweet wheat malts. The is brewing at a top level!

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

Gentle nose of coffee chocolate and vanilla slightly burnt. Poison opaque almost black body with slightly warm brown overtones and a beige head with good retention and little lace. Pretty sick mouse creamy and foamy but in a good way. Damn this tastes good! Fairly complex and with a long finish. Hits with chocolate coffee combination some vanilla bean playing in the middle along with deeply roasted malts. Perfectly bittered great balance The vanilla bean almost plays as lactose really dry clean finish one of the best stouts I've ever had. (Amazing grain bill: Maris Otter Pale, Chocolate, Caramel 40L, Roasted Barley, Midnight Wheat, Caramel 80L, Flaked Oats.

17 Wave Length United States IPA 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

On tap at the local, Icons in New Fairfield Connecticut. Slightly mild nose no barley detectable hints of some wheat. Perhaps are largely tropical citra happening here. Appearance is classic New England hazed IPA moderate gold to copper body white head that has some retention leaves a skim coat with gorgeous lace. I'm loving the mouth feel on this which is coming from the wheat no doubt it's creamy and moderate to full bodied. The flavor is spot on for New England hazy.... It's heady topper slightly reduced. At 6.5% it it's a nice place on the alcohol level. The flavors are typical of your hazy New England IPA some mango some pineapple very tropical and yet they are somewhat more restrained which I think is a plus. The spirit is happening for sure and I'm going to have to check out equilibrium for some more of their brews.

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Fantastic head, complex and highly appealing aroma full of fruit and spice, easy on the mouth and incredibly soft for this strong a brew. Tastes as good 30 seconds after you swallow as it does when it first enters your mouth; just a wonderfully clean after-taste. This is that rare beer that sips just as good as it guzzles. The only way I have been able to "nurse" one is by pouring it a third at a time into my glass. And its worth savoring, you get the great head on all three pours and the flavor evolves as it is allowed to breathe a bit. Just an truely fantasic brew...absolutely top 5!

19 Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout United Kingdom Oatmeal Stout 4.4

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

An amzaingly fast to dissapear nose of rasberrys and malt.. wish it had stuck around a bit longer. Also a fairly short-lived head taht is carmel in color and leaves moderate lace. Pours a deep deep brown body that is quite opaque. Mouthfeel is nice... good tingle fairly slippery, perhaps a touch thin. Taste is becoming interesting.Flavor at first seems simple it is going almost straight to the end taste but the end taste, while brief, seems quite complex. I think I may have poured this a bit too cold and am going to let it warm a bit before more tasting. The hops in this stout are not shy. It hits with a combination of bitter and floral with a touch of orange peel, and super clean for a stout. I'm not getting much nid taste or perhaps the begining middle and end are incredibly well folded into one another. It goes carmel and toasty and brown sugar very rapidly which is combined with a nice bready tatse and follows with oats. It ends clean and slightly sweet and then if followed with a slightly sour and smokey aftertaste. There is a plesant tobacco taste in the end note as well. Alcohol is completley masked. Second pour at a slightly warmer temperature. Much less fruit in the nose, some chocolate and some grape. Interstingly it smells a bit like a smoked gouda. The head is lasting a bit longer this time and is lovely to look at a nice combination of tight foam broken up with pockets of large bubbles. Teh initial simplicity of this stout is deceptive. For me it required more detailed concentration then many beers but that attention revealed a quite complex and wonderfully crafted stout. This oen burbs geat too!

20 Duvel Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 4.4

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Bread and honey in the nose with just a hint of vanilla and lemmon. Amazing head! Pure white frothy, huge .....whipped eggwhites is comprised of VERY large bubbles, beautiful to gaze at with the best lace I have seen. This sits on a very transparent pale gold body. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with a nice tingle. (It might be my imagination but I have had maybe a quarter of the bottle while writing this and I think I am already a bit buzzed.)Flavor is very clean, alcohol very well masked. Its a perfectly balanced flavor that is constantly complex throughout, not a lot of stages to the taste except perhaps a distinct aftertaste that goes deliciously sour and a nice bit of bitter. The alcohol shows up in the aftertaste more as a feeling then a taste. The taste......earthy with a bit of nut flavor, sour ripe fruit somewhere between grape and fig, a complcated yeast component and a nice malt flavor that gives a solid backbone that is ever so slightly sweet and plays beautifully witht the sour. This is just art in a glass; an intense complexity of brewing perfection hidden in what appears to be at first a very simple flavor. This is incredible beer-making! I am starting to think my ratings at the high end are low, this is probably a 4.7 beer as are several others that I have ranked in the low 4's (which are tops of my list.) One other comment, for a strong ale this is incredibly lager like in its character!

21 Dogfish Head World Wide Stout United States Imperial Stout 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 10

Oh My God! didn't see ABV on the bottle but one sniff! Alcohol dominates the nose with black cherries, concord grape, and perhaps cassis, and some definate malt in the nose as well. Ruby black opaque body sits over a very minimal burnt umber head that goes away fast leaving a skim coat and a bit of lace. Mouth is medium bodied, slick, and more carbonation detected than is visually apparent; coats the mouth nicely. Taste is winey in a nice way, hits a touch bitter then goes sweet with a big alcohol burn, has a nice tratness towards the end, finish is suprisingly dry, and then leaves a really full and complicated aftertaste, almost like a mince meat pie but I actually like this. Real good burnt malt backbone on this oneThis could bring to mind Southern Comfort of perhaps Sloe Gin. Certainly NOT a session beer, bottle says it has a ridiculous amount of barley, not sure I know what that tastes like, I am having this for dessert and its yummy but takes a bit of getting used to. Not everyone's cup of tea a but a damn interesting experiment, I would like to see what it would taste like in a less sweet version, could they keep the 18% under control tatse-wise without quite so much sweetness? but then it would be a different beer! Hats of to DFH as usual.

22 Pinkus Organic Münstersch Alt Germany Altbier 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

Aroma reminiscent of a Brown ale, slightly funky (they always remind me of tennis balls) some vanilla and some peppery and citrusy hop notes with just a touch of biscuit. Great rocky head is large and pure white with moderate retention and fantastic lace, sits atop a slightly fogged (organic) medium golden body with a hint of copper. This beer has a lovely mouthfeel, thick and slippery and a bit chewy with nice tingle from well done carbonation. OK, now that I have reveiwed it I have read the other reviews of people who I respect like ECB and Hannah and Eaglefan and others. I do agree that the color may not be right for style but I am shocked by the low reviews it has received, I am going to have to get another soon and drink it cold to see if that is the difference or perhaps there is a lack of consistency. I am drinking this on the warm side which I suspect is appropriate. The taste if very round and mellow, excellent balance! Starts tart, almost fermented pear with significant hop notes of pepper and citrus, there is a very mild carmel note, it is not grassy, yeast is big in mid-taste but is not sour: somehow it has a very deep mellowness to it, there is bread and malt and vanilla towards the end which is mellowing the yeast flavor I think, and it ends dry and slightly tart with significant warming effect of alcohol. This beer is very complex but so well balanced that the complexity is hard to notice, yes I am in Love! (and it it priced very well IMHO).

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Re-rate: 2023 not going to change the score but I sure do miss the old label. Some pine and citrus in the nose; apricot, rose petals, and grapefruit. Pour is gorgeous. Quite a pale amber body topped by a rocky, frothy head with great retention and good lace. Medium bodied slightly slippery mouth. Flavor is unique IMHO. With no malt in the nose this has a pretty strong malt backbone. Malt is neutral, neither toasty nor sweet. This beer is bitter! Great job using some hops for nose and others for bittering. The citrus and pine are not nearly as strong in the flavor profile as they are in the nose. Just a really big bitter clean finish with a hint of sour. Some peppery notes detected and once I thought I tasted coffee. Also some pineapple. And wheat, I taste the wheat. Alcohol is a significant part of taste profile. Did I mention fantastic lace? Did I mention bitter? How did they make this beer as pale as it is (all wheat.) Lagunitas never disappoints. This is an extremely well made brew! Rerate 1/21/13 I just adore this brew, there is a lot of pine and citrus in the taste and also some apricot ... wonderful stuff!

24 Sixpoint Resin United States Imperial IPA 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

One of the strongest noses I have encountered, pop the top on this can and smell pine and citrus instantly for 2 feet away. Nose also includes some floral notes and perhaps vanilla. I love the look but again, like yesterday's review of Finch's Threadless IPA the body is cloudy perhaps chill haze? so will have to knock a few points off of this orangish amber body topped with decent white head with moderate lace. Mouth is medium bodied, slippepry, and spot on carbonation; very nice! Flavor is big, balanced and 9% alcohol fairly well masked. starts a touch sweet, notes of tobacco, sour citrus, some bread, quite bitter, very dry finish. 103 IBU is strong, this one is for hop heads, spectacular IIPA! There are some quite low scores here mentioning weak nose, not hoppy. I don't know whats going on; reviewers or brewer has quality control problem.

25 Clown Shoes Tramp Stamp Belgian India Pale Ale United States IPA 4.4

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

WTF is a "belgian-style IPA".... I had to find out. Nose is nice, orange and pine notes evenly balanced, good spice..pepper and cumin?... and a touch of sweetness from the malt bill, reminds me of honey...or maybe its just because this beer is beautiful in the glass, a medium honey-colored body is topped by an excellent frothy slightly -off-white head that is long lasting and has great lace. Ever so slightly cloudy with carbonation gently streaming up the sides, did I mention I love the look of this beer? Mouth is thickish and a bit creamy with a nice slickness and good tingle. I was scared of the flavor, what is a Belgian IPA and I am usually worried about ales "brewed with natural flavor"..I was picturing an IPA with a bunch of spices dumped into it, thank god its not. There is a sweetness to this IPA and it is not as hoppy as say, a West Coast hophead IPA, but its credentials are solid. Fruitier than most IPA's slightly reminds me of Hat #9's apricot but not nearly that fruity. The fruit and sweetness are in the front of the taste and are almost immediately countered with a good bitter hit, not flowery hops, not earthy, the orange is there but subtle. The Chambly yeast is, I suspect, what gives this its unique profile, pretty unusual in an IPA, it adds some spice and a round flavor found often in wits, a subtle play on a farmhouse flavor. Yes I am loving this!!!! Its bringing together my two favorite profiles, IPA and Saison and doing it damn successfully! Good grief I am shocked that this subtle brew is going to end up as my highest rated beer! This beer is a whole new world for me.
