176 Bass IPA United States English Pale Ale 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Good strong nose, citrus (orange?) pepper and pine and some surprising sweet malts. Unusual reddish copper body (for an IPA) topped with decent short offwhite head leaving good lace. Mouth is medium and dry and slightly under-carbonated. Flavor..is there rye in malt bill? It is reminiscent of bass (admittedly not my favorite brew) fairly hoppy, interesting balance and flavor plays going on. Hits a bit astringent (making me think of rye) and then sweetens in mid flavor, not fruity but perhaps a bit of candy, ands dry and astringent with a slightly sweet aftertaste. Alcohol is part of the flavor complex. I wonder about the scores here, as an IPA (so labeled on the bottle) I would give it lower numbers than as BP's EPA listed here. I like the complexity and balance, pretty interesting brew. Rerate 2/20/2014 Downgrading , nose is perfumy, mouth is thin, malts are still candy, body is missing, hops minimal for even a EPA let alone an IPA.... what was I thinking?

177 Innis & Gunn Rum Cask Oak Aged Beer United Kingdom English Strong Ale 2.6

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 5

Nose is predominately whisky with some bread, some coffe notes as it warms. Me no like. Pours a decent whitish head that is quite short lasting. Body is a dark clear copper, almost no lace. Mouth is watery. Flavor is predominately sweet. Maple syrup notes with a fair bit of malt and a sweet whiskey finish. How do you rate flavor on this odd-ball whisky/oak strong ale? I think you say that this is NOT what a strong ale should taste like, add 1 pt since its odd and give it a 6. Will not drink this again. And its over-priced.

178 Wychwood Hobgoblin United Kingdom English Strong Ale 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Nose is mild with roasted malt predominating and some dark ripe fruit.Body is light brown with copper hint, fairly still with a moderate camel-colored head that leaves a decent coat and slight lace. Mouth is medium bodied, a touch creamy decent tingle. Flavor profile is round with toasty malts well balanced with fruits esters and moderate resinous hops. Finish is nice with a touch of honey that turns to a slightly sour citrus and it lingers. I think this is going to get better after I let it warm a bit. Yup I am really enjoying this, maybe some prune, some chocolate, some orange,Nice Brew.

179 Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball Ale United States English Strong Ale 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Some hops notes and ripe dark fruit in the nose and hints of roasted malt. Pours reddish deep copper with decent head. Mouth if full and sticky, carbonation spot on. Initially quite sweet but not cloying. Maybe its me but I think I taste some rye. Alcohol present but quite well masked for its power. Thick, fruity, not as hoppy as most Lags, but well balanced for a big beer, some fig or other dark ripe fruit notes. Goes down better than most big beers, which is just a bit scary.

180 Ridgeway Bad Elf Winters Ale United Kingdom English Strong Ale 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

review from memory (last night) on this one. A pale copper color and decent head with OK lace. Very hoppy nose, pine and spice. Suprising hops profile in the flavor considering htis is an english strong made by an English brewer. There answer to American Pales I guess, which is nice to see. Pretty well balanced, not as hoppy as an APA but mabye for an English brew it lives up top their standard of what very hoppy is. Some malt is present but not what you would expect in an English Strong. Fairly clean dn dry after taste. Light to average mouthfeel and teh alcohol is well masked. A very pleasant beer. If you want hops without being killed by it this is a nice choice and would be a great session beer.

181 Hook Norton Twelve Days United Kingdom English Strong Ale 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Sweet brown sugar/caramel nose with malt and hops present as well as some dark ripe fruit. Clear dark dark brown body with a lot of ruby overtones very minimal head with no lace. Mouth is surprisingly light bodied. Taste hits sweet, strongly bitter hops kick in, hints of coffee and fig and some slight alcohol and carmelized malts, pretty nicely balanced. Tastes almost like a slightly smoked porter. but thinner.

182 Duchy Originals Organic Ale United Kingdom Extra Special Bitter 4.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Aroma is a nice mix of malts and hops...pine, lemon peel, rosemary, and apples with a nice bready overtone. The aroma lasts! This is an aromatic brew. Appearance is in the eye of the beholder I guess but this one looks lovely to me. Pours a medium deep copper-colored body that is slightly foggy and is just a bit more red than most copper-colored ales ...bronze I guess. Caps with a very foamy head that is nicely done and lasts a moderate amount of time. No constantly rising bubbles but a nice thin foam remains on the top and excellent lacing. Mouth is real nice, very soft and velvety, smooth and suprisingly a nice hint of thickness with a decent tingle. Like the nose promised there is a good amount of hops in this beer. It hits a bit nutty-malty,yeasty, a little rosemary astingency in the taste --- not a strong flavor but nicely done. Leads to a nice yet not terribly complex sweet sour thing and ends tart and dry. Reminisent of an IPA with less hops bitterness, this is a very drinkable ale. Alcohol is fully masked. I drank a LOT of English bitters in the pubs in 73 when I was 19, This is the first I have had since. For a beer that in most ways is modest I am suprised how high my rating is going to come out. This is just very well done!

183 Morland Old Speckled Hen United Kingdom Extra Special Bitter 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Mild in the nose, sweet and sour and perhaps a bit cloying, malt bread pepper and citrus. Very nice very very long-lasting head is just off-white and foamy, sitting atop a pale copper body. Very creamy mouth with medium to heavy body. Flavor of ripe banana meeting a small dose of hops bitterness, and a sweet maple syrup flavor to boot. Alcohol is present as well. Eventaully goes a bit sour. Not the way I remember English bitters tasting in the 70's pubs in London, close but a bit heavier and more sour, unique.

184 Redhook ESB United States Extra Special Bitter 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Good balance of malt and spice in the nose, perhaps a bit too floral for style. Light copper body with decent short lived head and moderate lace. Mouthfeel is bready and medium bodied, good for style but perhaps a bit thin. Very malty flavor with strong bittering hops ends perhaps a bit too sweet, but aftertaste is bitter. There is a metalic/chemical taste in the finish that is objectionable. Not a bad effort, I prefer their IPA.

185 Goose Island Honkers Ale United States Extra Special Bitter 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Sucked down a quick bottle at O'Hare airport, no glass. Hard to say about nose without a glass but the nose seemed a bit mild., same for appearance. Mouth was medium flavor was hoppy in bitterness but not in flavor. It actually did remind me a lot of the pints of bitter I used to get in London back in 73. Very drinkable, good session beer. Kicking it up a bit based on EyeCharts appearance and aroma notes.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Reviewing from 2 day old memory and no adequate glass. Nice malty nose with a touch of pine and some sweet non-toasted malty notes. Bad glass (plastic cup, don't ask) so no appearance review. Medium to light mouth with good carbonation. Lots of good malt flavor something a bit odd in the hopping. Tastes a bit too much like a brown ale.

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Nose of bread and raisins and licorice. Medium copper body is topped by a moderate short lived head with very little lacing. Mouth is nicely slick, a bit under-carbonated and full.. Flavor is fairly complex. Tart apple, carmel malts, dark ripe fruit. Finish is slightly sweet. A very nice ESB!

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Nose: dark cherries, sour apple, sweet tarts. Cordovan body with a thin beige head ..good retention and some lace. Mouth is thin with a nice tingle. Alcohol totally masked, hits sour, ends sweet, some raspberry, for sure some sweet-tarts, this is odd but i get a bit of beef fat (in a good way) then ending is pretty clean, after taste is light citrus. This is really pretty damn tasty. Would not be my regular drink but its a nice change of pace.

189 Magic Hat #9 United States Fruit Beer 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Well I am long overdue to review this one. Its kind of a standard for me, good to have around for folks who usually just drink swill but will try something else occasionally. Aroma is INTENSLY apricot with maybe just a bit of black pepper. Pours a white frothy head with very little retention and light alce. A nice light gold foggy body with decent eppervescence> Mouthfeel is nice, a bit slippery, medium bodied with good tingle, kind of like a heffe mouthfeel.Taste is straightforward the sweet fruity apricot with a very gentle hops hit right after, ends a bit sour and maybe just slightly mettalic. I like hat 9, its a good thirst quencher and an easy drinker although the apricot may be a big turn off for some. Never had it on draught which might be interesting.

190 Dogfish Head ApriHop United States Fruit Beer 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Hmmm, Ok its got fruit in it so I guess its a fruit beer, but its much more. Nose has a ton of apricot when first poured with hints of hopy citrus notes that become more predominant after a moment or two. Also a lot of pine in the nose, its a very big nose and sweet. Pours a pale clear copper with decent off white head that dissipates fast with minimal lace. Mouth is slippery and medium bodied and quite fizzy in an OK way. Flavor is pretty well balanced lots of apricot but lots of hops too, kinda like magic hat but with out the sour, the hops and the alcohol keep the sweetness just this side of cloying. The is a peppery note from the hops as well and a bit more malt then one might expect. Alcohol present but masked well. Finish is quite dry and very balanced after the initial apricot sweetness. for an apricot beer this is well done and befitting of DFH. Nicely done.

191 Leinenkugel Summer Shandy United States Fruit Beer 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Bought one on a lark in Key West. Aroma is lemon, wheat, and more lemon. Pours a foggy light gold body with a frothy, creamy white head that lasts quite well, little lace. Decent weiss mouthfeel, slippery, fizzy, not bad. Flavor is mostly lemonade, with some wheat coming through and finish is bitterish lemon peal. Not bad really pretty drinkable, it is what it says it is.

192 Industrial Arts State Of The Arts Series: Raspberry Lemon Hibiscus Lager United States Fruit Beer 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Rhinos of raspberry jam with a little biscuit in the background. Clear light Scarlet body with minimal white head that leaves a tiny bit of lace. Medium bodied and exceptionally fizzy. Fruit beers are not my cup of tea but reading it for what it is. The raspberry hit is strong well tempered by a little bitter lemon rind and a bit of Flowery hibiscus floating in the background when fears this would be extremely cloying however it's not. The Finish is close to clean the beer is sweet but not as sweet as one fears it might be. It burps a lot.

193 Two Roads No Limits Hefeweizen United States Hefeweizen 3.7

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Cardamom, bubblegum, clove, citrus peel on the nose. Pours a foggy gold/copper body with good white head and moderate lace. Mouth is well carbonated but a touch thin. Flavor is all bubble gum and clove perhaps lacking in the subtlety of a finer hefe. Pretty good attempt for an American Brewer.

194 Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Germany Hefeweizen 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Typical Hefe nose with the esters is just a little bit more on the mild side. More clove and spice than banana which I think I'm going to like. I didn't have a proper hefe glass but the poor has the head that won't expects frothy and white the lovely clear gold body tending towards the Amber side. Mouth is foamy medium to light bodied proper tingle. Flavor is following the nose. Light on the banana somewhat heavy on the clove hints of cardamom wheat malt is there but barely. Reminds me an awful lot of what I drink in the pubs in Switzerland. So I'm probably going to kick it up a little for sentimentality sake.

195 Schneider Weisse Tap 7: Schneider Weisse Original Germany Hefeweizen 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Pours out a nose of pepper, yeast, clove, and vanilla. In the glass its a medium copper body (perhaps a bit too much clarity) with a creamy head that dissipates rapidly to a nice layer of lace with a small ring of foam around the edges. Lace on the sides after a swig slowly and fully slips back down the glass; its a little slippery on the glass and in the mouth which is a quality I enjoy in a good Hefe. Mouth feel is slick, sof,t slippery and thin. This beer is well balanced and just a touch mild for a Hefe. It hits sweet, flowery, and peppery... then goes to a lemony tart and sour...finishes delightfully dry and leaves a mildly tart pepper in the aftertaste. It burbs great too!

196 Paulaner Hefeweizen Germany Hefeweizen 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

A wonderful Hefe! A very prominent aroma as it should be. Pine forests and lemon grass, vanillia, bread and ripe berries, a great nose! Classic appearance, all, foggy and fine coming at you in a lovely unfiltered deep gold. Pours a great fluffy head, exactly right for its type with moderate endurance. Nice lace slides back down rapidly but leaves semi-circular wisps so you remember it was there. Mouthfeel is velvet carbonation. Taste is all Hefe..slightly astringent almonds, wheat and spice, hinting at raisins and tropical fruit followed by a wonderful bread/yeast flavor that is perfectly balanced. This is a real upfront hefe; not timid at all. Finishes extremely clean with a tiny hint of sour, burbs great too!

197 Hacker-Pschorr Hefe Weisse Germany Hefeweizen 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Yummy, another good hefe! Opening nose of a typical hefe lotta tropical fruit and vanilla and bread and spice. TAstes like it smells with a soft slippery mouth feel. Pours a deep foggy golden amber with a big frothy head that disaptes rapidly, doesn't lace very well. Interesting, after it warms the character changes. The nose goes more towards spice and the hops begin to come out in the flavor, it becomes more complex.it hits sweet and sour and leaves a slightly bitter hopsy aftertaste. Not my very favorite hefe but variety is the spice of life. Had this tongiht with a spicy sweet Thai Cury and it paired better than I expected though, with theat particular meal, a stronger hops finishmight have been nicer.

198 Pinkus Hefeweizen Germany Hefeweizen 2.7

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

This is one odd Heffe! Nose of pine and lemon, i get no banana and no clove/corriander, maybe a little pepper. A bit on the pale side a foggy yellow body is topped by an OK white head that has poor retention and zero lacing. Mouth is thin which is OK for Hefe but it is also watery, not OK, could use more tingle and more slipperyness. Flavor...what flavor? OK you can taste lemmon and pine at first and then it goes a bit yeasty and finishes too sweet and almost grassy. I like my Hefe upfront and this is just timid to the core. I liked there Pils alot but this is a failure. OK its very drinkable if you are not expecting a Hefe, its Hefe-lite!

199 Erdinger Festweisse Germany Hefeweizen 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Very unusual brew! Really big nose lots of malt and some hoppy fruit, not bananas or other esthers normally found in a hefe. large eggwhites head befitting the hefe style atop a very cloudy light peach/amber body. Light on the lacing. Mouthfeel is a bit fullish and not as slick as a normal hefe. Not a complicated flavor but nicely balanced for a fest. Not much hops, lots of malt, and some yeast... again befitting the hefe style but clove, and tropical fruit esters notably absent, this really is between hefe an marzen/oktoberfest. Quie interesting, very drinkable. A faint sourness to the finish which is dry.

200 Hofbrau Munchen Kindl Weissbier (Hefe Weizen) / Hofbräu Munchen Kindl Weissbier (Hefe Weizen) Germany Hefeweizen 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

this is a great hefe, really sets the style for others to match, the spicing is subtle yet present. Complicated and long-lasting nose...wheat, yeast, lemon, pepper and a deep not quite banana. Beautiful clouded gold body with a lovely very white head that has amazing retention, no lacing to speak of. Mouth is medium bodied with a bit of slipperyness and a nice tingle. Flavor is dead on style, lemmon, bready notes, alcohol fully masked, just the right amount of sour to play with the sweetness, no significant hops presence, and a crystal clean finish. This is a classic.
