176 Half Full India Pale Ale United States IPA 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Don't think this beer exists anymore. This review was for Half Full's Pursuit IPA. Pine and raisin in the nose and some floral notes, some honey, some mint. Deep copper body with moderate off-white head, decent lace and retention. Nice mouth, slightly slick, slightly creamy. Complex and well balanced flavor profile. Very good malt backing with tangy and flavor hops well presented. Finish is dry and clean. A very well made brew.

177 Jack's Abby Hoponius Union United States Pale Lager 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Nose starts with lemon and malt, after a few minutes floral notes appear. Nice white head with good retention and very nice lace sits atop a cloudy, unfiltered, medium gold body. For a lager the mouth is quite full, a bit creamy and a bit chewy. Very nice carbonation level. The 65IBU's are NOT hidden, this baby is dry and bitter throughout. malt is upfront in the initial taste hit with just a bit of honey flavor, then gets floral and tropical with lavender and sour kumquat, finish is dry as a bone and clean. For a "hybrid" product this is not weird, well balanced, and very well done!

178 Grey Sail Brewing Pour Judgement IPA United States IPA 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Mild but lasting nose of mountain wild flowers, clover honey, and a hint of ripe tropical fruit. Pours a surprisingly cloudy pale peach body with a very good white head that lasts and laces very well, and leaves some debris on the bottom of the glass....is this unfiltered??? I don't think so but don't know which makes it very tuff to grade. Mouth is VERY creamy for an IPA, close to full bodied yet finishes a bit thin, interesting and a nice change of pace. Flavor is subtle. Some hints of honey, the hops are fairly neutral and bittering. The Eureka! hop is interesting, slightly peachy and leads to a very very dry finish. Wonder what the "German"malt bill is here, almost seems like a pils malt. All in all a unique IPA that remains true to the style.

179 Black Isle Export Oatmeal Stout United Kingdom Imperial Stout 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Chocolate and licorice notes as well as grape juice in the nose. A vigorous pour produces a decent frothy camel-colred head with good retention and decent lace. Body is opaque very dark brown with a hint of ruby. Mouth is medium and a bit chewy and quite fizzy, maybe too fizzy. Licorice is the predominant flavor for sure with some bitter chocolate and burnt grain at the ending. This rounds out a bit after a few swigs, that initial Licorice hit is a bit shocking, but now I am starting to enjoy the brew. There is some black cherry flavor hidden in there, starts sweet and goes bitter in the middle with a surprisingly clean aftertaste. 2nd Black Aisle I have had and both are high quality beer making.

180 Flying Dog Snake Dog IPA United States IPA 4.0

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Unusual nose of vanilla and pepper with some floral notes. Very cloudy pale orange body is topped with a white head that leaves a nice skim coat and very good lace.( I think its really pretty but for style is should be clear unless unfiltered which it does not claim to be.) Mouth is spot on, medium bodied, slick, perfect carbonation. This sucker is bitter, more bitter than the 60 IBU indicates. I am very impressed, the hops are more for bittering than for flavor. (and not familiar with Warrior and Columbus hops.) Starts a bit sweet on the tongue with tropical fruit and some grapefruit, nice solid malt backbone is neutral to slightly toasty, bitter hits in at the end and the finish is somewhat dry but with a nice fruitiness. Fairly unique IPA that is simple on a wonderful way. Intersting, the lower scores here are basically saying that there is nothing "special" about this IPA which is exactly what I like about it.

181 Stone Stochasticity Project Grainiac United States Strong Ale 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Surprisingly floral nose with bread notes and slightly roasted grain. Strong nose. Pours a very dark copper body with a nice beige head with good retention and little lace. Mouth is a bit thin and very fizzy. Flavor....GRAIN! they ain't kidding!!! Burnt oatmeal, sweet dark fruit, licorice, some bright lemony hop notes, astringent bitter finish, alcohol well masked, aftertaste is sweet licorice. A big beer that is complex and well balanced. Kick top the appearance and mouth and this would be a real winner but great fun to drink regardless.

182 He'Brew Bittersweet Lennys R.I.P.A. United States Imperial IPA 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Nose of toasted malt, pine, and bubblegum. Pours a deep copper body with a caramel colored head with good retention and decent lace. Mouth is a bit thin but well carbonated and nicely slick. Lots of rye in the flavor profile. The hops are bittering, there is a sweet note half way through. Alcohol is present and warming. There is a funk to this flavor that I can't put my finger on but is related to the bublbegum nose, it hints at a Belgium farmy yard flavor. Not my cup of tea but well done.

183 Southern Tier Imperial Gemini (2014+) United States Imperial IPA 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Big honking nose of pine and tropical fruit. A vigorous pour produces an OK head that has moderate retention and lace with a light copper body. Mouth is chewy and slick. A bit sweet with lots of bitter but avoids the Sweet Tart trap. Malt backbone is minimal. Alcohol fairly well masked but warming,

184 Harpoon Celtic Ale United States Irish Ale 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Sweet malty noise with a hint of pepper, but very mild. Nice cream colored head with thousands of tiny bubbles that disipates fairly rapidly to a very nice lace. A nearly perfect redish amber body that is clear. Mouthfeel is all in the back of the pallete, clean and soft. Initial taste is a bitter hops but it is rapidly followed by a nice malty sweet and sour hit. Finish is clean and tart. Not very complex but it shouldn't be complex. Not a ton of taste but perfectly balanced. ABV unknown but I am guessing high 4's. A really well done American version of a classic Irish Red Ale, I am going to have to pick up a 6 of Smithwicks and tatste these side by side. This is a VERY well done ale.

185 Hacker-Pschorr Hefe Weisse Germany Hefeweizen 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Yummy, another good hefe! Opening nose of a typical hefe lotta tropical fruit and vanilla and bread and spice. TAstes like it smells with a soft slippery mouth feel. Pours a deep foggy golden amber with a big frothy head that disaptes rapidly, doesn't lace very well. Interesting, after it warms the character changes. The nose goes more towards spice and the hops begin to come out in the flavor, it becomes more complex.it hits sweet and sour and leaves a slightly bitter hopsy aftertaste. Not my very favorite hefe but variety is the spice of life. Had this tongiht with a spicy sweet Thai Cury and it paired better than I expected though, with theat particular meal, a stronger hops finishmight have been nicer.

186 Magic Hat Hocus Pocus United States American Wheat 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

I like Hat's offerings a lot but hated "CircusBoy", their hefe and my previous review was of Harpoon's hefe, also a great dissapointment,so it was with trepidation that I approached Hocus Pocus, Magic Hat's seasonal wheat offering. Its pretty damn drinkable! Aroma starts all yeast but later developes nice fruit...lemons and oranges, with a hint of black pepper. Pours a clear medium gold with a head that is big but maybe a bit to much about froth. Head dissipates rapidly and leaves nice lacing. Carbonation is nicely done providing a silky mouth feel with a nice tingle.Flavor makes this beer very drinkable. The wheat is up front with a very smooth malty balance, it hits tart, sweetness and fruit follow and ends crisp and clean with a tiny hint of sour. This could be a major session beer for a hot summer day. (This review is completely rewritten...the first beer out of the six was not nearly this good, maybe it was me, maybe there is a consistancy problem. Original review vcame out in the very low 2's and now its up to a 3.9...thats a HUGE difference!) When drinking this one I had just finished some very hot salsa and HocusPocus went great with it. I highly recommend this Magic Hat offering.

187 North Coast Brother Thelonious United States Belgian Strong Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Interesting beer, reminds me of a dopplebock. Pours a ruby brown, lots of violet in the body.Decent light biege head that has medium endurance, good lacing. Not a lot of nose to this beer which is suprising. Wahts there is some yeast and some berry. Mouthfeel is full and the carbonation is nicely done. Strong flavor elements and fairly complex, befitting its Belgium target. A very winey flavor with lots of spice and fruit followed by a significant presence of alcohol, finishes sweet. Not a lot of hops profile in this brew. A very good american attempt at a Belgium Stong ale and they kick in 2 bucks a case towards a jazz foundation. (Thelonius Monk, Thelooniou Brothers, Monks made Belgium Ale, its kinda clever.) rerate 1/2/2016 Did the recipe change or did I? Tons of long-lasting nose on this thing; figs, cotton candy, grape, marking that up. Zero lace, marking that down. Carbonation seems a bit light.Pretty tasty though. But qutie sweet and alcoholmore maked that previous tasting.

188 Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale United States Brown Ale 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Very small and short lived beige head with minimal lacing over a deep deep copper colored body . Perhaps the carbonation is not as well done as most Dogfish products. Nose of citrus, figs and cotton candy. Mouth feel is delightful… all silk and velvet with a decent tingle but just a bit thin. Flavor is nice, the first tatste is porter-like but becomes more aleish as time goes buy. It hits sweet with a good carmel flavor then goes astringent and hoppy with a nice bitterness that leads to a sweet flavor of toasty malts. Well balanced for a sweet ale it finishes surprisingly clean and fairly dry. Alchohol is barely present in the taste but leaves a nice heat in the belly. This would probably be a great beer to introduce less adventurous quaffers to a whole new world of elixers. Its very very aproachable! RERATE 11/22/2016 Nose has nots of licorice and bourbon. Vigorous pour now produces a thick frothy head with good retention and lace.

189 Samuel Adams Black Lager United States Schwarzbier 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Toasty chocolate malts predominate in the nose but some citrus notes detectable, its a very inviting nose! Beautiful frothy pale carmel colored head with decent retention sits atop an deep ruby body that is almost black and not quite opaque. Good lacing. My first experience with a Schwarzbier didn't know such things existed. Nice slippery mouthfeel, much fuller than most lagers. Good flavor, chocolate is there as are toasty malts, a really solid malt profile but balanced with nice amount of hops lending just a bit of tartness and citrus to the sweet body. Ends clean and fairly dry. I would not have minded a bit more alcohol presence but it really is well balanced.

190 Lagunitas Censored (Kronik) United States Strong Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

I have a bit of allergies going on so may have to revisit this but I get almost no nose, what there is malt. Pours a clear, medium, copper colored body with minimal head and moderate retention, some lace and malt evidence floating on the top of the brew. Mouthfeel is medium and fizzy in a good way. Coasts the mouth well.First taste is sweet malt and alcohol which dissapears slowly into pepper, and a touch of pine. Gets nicely bitter in the end, hops are well done. No masking of alcohol here, its an integral part of the flavor and its really quite a nicely balanced flavor. Nice warming in the aftertaste which is dry and clean. I wonder again if its my nose and not the beers nose. I will revisit as this would get very high marks if the nose was better (and I would love a nicer head and lace.)ReRate 8/20/08 Nice nose, malt, vanilla, ripe dark fruit of cherry or fig with some floral hops as well, maybe even a great nose, and the lacing is real nice as well.

191 Dogfish Head Shelter Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

The nose is mild but very appealing. Cinamon, pepper, violets and rosemary. A slightly fogged light coppr body is topped with a moderate head that leaves a long-lasting skim coat and laces nicely. Mouth is a touch light with a real nice back of the tongue tickle. I like the flavor a lot! Hopheads are probably going to find it slightly lacking for an American Pale but it is quite hoppy. Starts ever so slightly sweet, goes very nicely bitter and ends exceptionally clean and dry. The malt backbone is really well done with just a hint of a toasted/caramel flavor. I find the balance exceptional. This is a great session beer!

192 Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA United States Strong Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Ok, reviewing from memory after an afternoon on the Hudson starting with Brown Sugga, followed by Hampton Double White, and ending with DogFishHead 120 minute, amazing I can still type! jesus 20.04 abv it really is amazing I can type! OK they set sail here for a really big beer with really big hops and they didn't fail. Decent head cosidering the ABV sits on a orangish body, clean medium mouth well carbonated. Major hops flavor but somehow not overpwoering, nicely done for a real hophead brew. Good balance good complaxity considering its aimed at 2 notes, hops and alcohol. Alcohol at 20 abv is really well masked. Excellent oddball that is very drinkable! This beer is all it claims to be.

193 Abita Turbo Dog United States Brown Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

I suspect the bad reviews come from folks who are drinking this too cold! This brew is quite different once it warms to what I think of as English pup temperature then it is when fresh out of the fridge. When cold, this beer tastes to me like a slightly watered-down stout; mostly just bitter coal tar taste. Bring that bottle outta the fridge for 10 or 15 minutes before you open it and its a whole different animal! Pours very dark brown with ruby undertones present when held to light, not quite opaque. Pours with a nice caramel colored head that has only modest retention but delivers very nice lace. Nose of figs, coffee, and dark chocolate; a mild nose but nice although not long lasting. Mouth is medium bodied and, for a beer that appears quite still in the glass, quite frothy... the carbonation is very tight. When very cold this beer tastes nothing but bitter but when allowed to warm slightly the flavor really rounds out; the crystal and chocolate malts come into their own and balance the hops quite nicely. It hits slightly sweet, goes bitter, and finishes chocolate goodness with a slightly sweet aftertaste. Really a masterful job of balancing. There is a bit of a sweet-sour thing going own that reminds me of Belgium and may be responsible for the reviews that detected mettalic (its not!)This may be the only beer that I have given a higher "overall" number to then I did to any other category; not overly complex yet this beer is more than the sum of its parts. Well done Abita!

194 Peak Organic Nut Brown Ale United States Brown Ale 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Not a lot of nose; slightly malty/sweet and fruity with citrus and a hint of pine. this is "organic" and there is a lot of residue floating in the dark copper body. Dirty white head that has moderate retention and moderate lacing. Mouth is a bit thin IMHO carbonation well done. Flavor is uncomplicated but fairly standard altbier stuff. I can't really taste the chocolate malts and I might like a bit sturdier malt backbone,it hits slightly sweet then goes a bit sour ends with a fairly strong hop bite (not hophead strong). The finish is very clean and dry, I might try the next one a bit warmer and see if the malt comes out more. Tastes like more to me and I suspect you could drink a lot of these, good session beer and overall a nice job.. A few days later RERATE I let it warm just a bit this time before pouring suspected the first one was too cold but I was too thirsty! Huge foamy head, great lace, nose a bit more fruity but still a bit weak, very nice taste, chocolate malt just detectable, great hop, malt balance, real nice beer!

195 Morland Old Speckled Hen United Kingdom Extra Special Bitter 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Mild in the nose, sweet and sour and perhaps a bit cloying, malt bread pepper and citrus. Very nice very very long-lasting head is just off-white and foamy, sitting atop a pale copper body. Very creamy mouth with medium to heavy body. Flavor of ripe banana meeting a small dose of hops bitterness, and a sweet maple syrup flavor to boot. Alcohol is present as well. Eventaully goes a bit sour. Not the way I remember English bitters tasting in the 70's pubs in London, close but a bit heavier and more sour, unique.

196 Stone India Pale Ale United States IPA 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Big ole hops nose all piney goodness with hints of grapefruit and a bit of grass. Pours a clear deep gold with a frothy white head that does not last but leaves a nice skim coat. Decent lace. Mouthfeel is light but not watery with a nice level of carbonation. Flavor is sweet in the first hit, rapidly turns big time bitter, goes a bit sweet/sour and then finishes very bitter with a dry clean aftertaste. Good malt backbone on this one and much more complex and balanced than many "hophead" beers. A first rate west coast version on an IPA and one for the hop heads.

197 Spaten Oktoberfestbier Germany Marzen / Oktoberfest 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Reviewing the bottle but it is quite similar to the draft. malt and biscuit and vanilla in the nose, no real hops nose at all. Clear medium amber body is topped by a decent head with little retention but nice lace. Mouth is medium bodied, fills the mouth nicely and is clean and the carbonation is done nicely. Nice carbonation level. Wow is this drinkable! Hits a little sweet with nice roasty maltedness, gives a quick hop tingle then finishes a bit sour. This could be a major major session beer, somewhat befitting its purpose!

198 Brooklyn Ale (Pennant Ale) United States English Pale Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Generally it seems to me that Pale Ales are underrated here, perhaps the style is just not very popular; milder than APA's or IPA's. the nose on this is a mix of big malts and cirtusy hops, fairly standard for the style. A nice clear light copper body with a good frothy off white head, moderate retention and lace. Good mouth, a light medium body slick, nice fiz. Carmel malt flavor provides a decent backbone with a stronger hops bite then might be expected, this tastes more like a light IPA than a Pale Ale. Finish is dry and clean, alcohol not present (and I miss it.) This is a very acceptable session brew but there are better American Pales out there, I like Geary's alot more. Nothing wrong here, just a bit unbalanced, not enough malt but very drinkable. Rerate: 12/12/08 What was I thinking/drinking? Lovely malt backbone, great hops balance at the end, really nice brew!!!!!

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Grapes and figs in the nose along with serious citrusy hops. Very dark amber body with minimal head and lace. Very fullish slippery mouth, flavor is sweet carmelized sugar at first hit followed by anice, pears, raisins, pepper and a strong sour and bitter finish, after taste of piney hops.

200 Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest Marzen Germany Marzen / Oktoberfest 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Nose of roasted malt is mild, pours a smallish off-white head with poor retention and no lace sitting atop of a clar pale copper colored body with odd hints of yellow and green. Mouth is a nice medium body coats the palate well, but carbonation is under done. Flavor starts slightly sweet and malty, goes to hints of pear and fig, has a bit of a hops bite towards the end and finishes peppery and just a touch sour. Fix the carbonation and this would be a much better brew.RERATE 11/2011 Been drinking a lot of this on draft and its excellent, carbonation is fine, malt presence is very large, best Oktoberfest I have had.
