151 Thimble Island Vanilla Coffee Stout United States Coffee Stout 3.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Nose of espresso, toffee, creme boule. Dark brown opaque body topped with almost no head, leaves no lace. Mouth is surprisingly a lite medium, even though no head the mouth seems over-carbonated. An enjoyable and highly artificial flavor profile. Coffee, vanilla, a wee hint of dank dark fruit. Sweetness is a bit cloying.

152 Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout United States Coffee Stout 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Strong nose; floral hops, tootsie rolls, and coffee. A nearly opaque dark brown body with a decent off-white head with little retention and little lace. Mouth is full, round, creamy, light on the carbonation. Flavor is predominately sweet, over ripe figs, coffee, brown sugar and with a fairly heavy hops bite. Clean and dry in the aftertaste. A little bit like eating a charred marshmellow.

153 Troutbrook Thomas Hooker Blonde Ale United States Cream Ale 3.1

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

Reviewing from memory, only had it on tap. Decent nose, a bit spicy and a bit fruity. Pale orange to medium amber color with so-so head, not much lace or retention. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, not particularly creamy, a bit slick. Tastes a bit like a whitbeir, I really thought there was wheat in it when I first had it. Its fairly sweet, finishes a bit sour and wet, has a little spice in in and some malt, I wonder if it has corn or rice? Not in any way spectacular but a decent flavor when the keg is fresh.

154 Grey Sail Brewing Flagship United States Cream Ale 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Malt and vanilla in the nose , a bit of grass, and with slight hint of floral and pine notes. Very nice thick white head over a deep golden body, great retention and nice lace. Mouth is medium bodied on the light side and well balanced on the various palettes. it is a bit creamy. Carbonation is spot on. Flavor is VERY mild and very nicely balanced. (OK, not my favorite style but reviewing it for what it is.) Starts with a hint of sweet, goes to a bit of sour, touch of bittering in the finish. Incredibly dry at the end with almost zero aftertaste. While I have said this before about bad beers in mean it nicely in this case, "best drink of water you will ever have." At a 4.9 abv, totally masked, this would be highly sessionable. 15 minutes later the is still a nice skim coat and decent lace. Not at all my style but really well crafted. Taste no adjuncts. What most US macros (although this is not) ought to be.

155 Ayinger Celebrator Dopplebock Germany Doppelbock 4.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Sweet nose of raisins and figs and molasses with a good bit of anise as it warms. As it warms there is some chocolate/coffee tones. Small dirty brown head that subsides leaving a skim coat sits atop a very dark brown body with a hint of ruby. Mouth is full and a bit chewy with a very nice fizz. The flavor is complex with malt and hops masterfully balanced. Taste starts dry goes a bit sweet and bitter at the same time in mid taste, finishes tart/sour and aftertaste is very dry. There are tastes of raisin, chocolate, coffee ... lots of toasty malt notes with a perfectly balanced hop bitterness. The alcohol is a bit present at the end with a nice warming. This is very similar to Aventinus and its hard to say which I prefer, will have to do a side by side tasting! Wonderful Brew, absolutely World Class!

156 Accelerator United States Doppelbock 1.9

Aroma: 3 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 4

Almost no nose to speak of. Some lightly roasted malts possibly Crystal malts. light brown body topped with almost no head and no lace. The mouth is thin and tingly. Some vague hints of chocolate in the flavor some vague pear which is very odd for the style and a bit of a chemical aftertaste. A bit more Hoppy than one expects and lacking in that bread flavored component. If you have to have a two roads beer that I like. Anybody want five bottles?

157 Einstök Icelandic Doppelbock Iceland Doppelbock 3.9

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Very surprisingly mild nose. Lovely medium brown to Ruby body with significant caramel colored head. Not much lace. Nice mouth Folsom coating slightly creamy significant fizz. Really like the flavor on this one. Some chocolate hints of coffee.... Brown sugar... Sweet but not cloyingly so... Bit of dark ripe fruit... Lengthy finish.

158 Weihenstephaner Korbinian Germany Doppelbock 4.5

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Nose: raisins, creme brulee, clove and banana faintly present. Appearance: opaque deep brown body topped with a long-lasting beige head with nice lace. Mouth: Fizzy for sure, clean with medium body plays strongly on the back of the tongue. Flavor: Damn this is tasty! Light coffee and sweet cacao in the front. Esters and phenols are present but very minimal..... I love this balance. Creme brulee really coming out as it warms slightly. Alcohol very well masked but slightly warming in the middle of the taste. Very very long finish which starts slightly sweet but really ends clean. Could be my new favorite brew.

159 Troegs Troegenator Doublebock United States Doppelbock 2.5

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

No nose, yes no nose! Vigorous pour produces very little head with near zero retention. True deep ruby body, off-white skim coat.Mouth is medium to light, a bit under-carbonated. Flavor is NOT bold, subtle ripe fruit, roasted grains, toffee, coffee, maybe some banana. Sweet cotton candy finish. I wonder if this is a bad bottle, the carbonation is just soooo off. The flavor profile is OK to good, the alcohol ois properly masked for the style.

160 Guinness Stout Ireland Dry Stout 2.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

Druaght in the bottle. The pour may be the best thing about this brew. I love watching the carbonation cascade down the sides to the bottom of the glass and then build up to a truely creamy, dark ivory head. The stout itself is a VERY deep brown and completley opaque. The lace is, if you can even call it that, a really thick and lovely foam residue on the sides of the glass. The head lasts forever. This beer has almost NO nose. Mouthfeel is suprisingly thin and a touch slimy. Flavor is uncomplicated. It hits sweet-sour with a significant amount of pine tar and rotted fruit and finishes sour. This is not as deep a flavor as I recall from past forced draughts. My English friends tell me the forced here is not as good as in England and that in England its not as good as in Ireland. The bottle says serve it very cold. I find that suprising and that may be contributing to the lack of depth and flavor. I will wait a bit and allow it to warm before giving this stout the poor rating it appears to be heading towards......Is gotten a bit better as it warms; a touch of coffee and oranges coming through and the sweet-sour is becoming more appealing. I hesitate to rate this bottle as I know it is so much better on draught. But bottle it is and bad it is!

161 Guinness Draught Ireland Dry Stout 3.2

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Nota Lita nose... Deep brown body, Carmel colored head nitro charged foamy lace. Thin for a stout. Gonna let warm before rating flavor but strikes me is not as good as a draft. Little charcoal from the dark malts, some roasted coffee almost playing with sweet in the middle a little milk lactose. It's Guinness.

162 Shiner Bock United States Dunkel / Dark Lager 2.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Pine and cotton candy in the nose, sweet malt. Brown with touch of red body topped with shortlasting white fizzy head that leaves a bit of lace. Mouth is medium bodied and slick, touch undercarbonated. Not much flavor, grain and sugar and mild. Texas should maybe not be brewing beer.

163 Victoria Mexico Dunkel / Dark Lager 2.7

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

Well this beer IS available in the US, maybe not legally but... I happened into a small Mexican Restaurant in a Mexican section of Brooklyn to get an order to take out. There was a hand written sign in felt marker on an old cardboard box side saying Victoria now available. Of course I had to try one. I am handicapped with this review because it came in a bottle and it didn't really look like the right place to ask for a glass, so I can't attest to appearance. That really bothers me because I see BeerPal lists this as a dunkel. I would never have guessed that from drinking it and none of the reviews here either support or contradict it being a dunkel. Almost NO aroma, just a very pale sweetness. Highly carbonated, I suspect small tight bubles that would disappear rapidly. Mouth feel very similar to water. Tasted to me like Corona but not as stong a flavor...LESS skunk. No nasty aftertaste. An easy drinking beer that is not particularly rewarding but quite acceptable. I imagine on a hot day it would be a great session lager. Interestingly, I was sitting near the kitchen, and when a shrimp dish hit the fan the beer actually started to taste like sea-food, the flavor and aromoa are that pale! I hope somebody reviews this beer and actually sees it, I would have sworn by taste that it would be pale golden, not a dunkel. I'll be damned, I searched the net and finally found apicture of a mug of this beer and it is indeed amber in color. This is one MILD dunkel!

OK Mexican macro-swill, nothing special here, balance is OK, touch sweet, drink it very cold with some nice spicy food on a hot day. Lots of slightly off flavors probably some corn or rice.

165 Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel Germany Dunkel Weizen 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 10

Aroma is faint, very bready, a hint of baking spices. Pours a lovely deep golden brown body with a off-white foamy head that has great retention and lace. Mouth is fizzy in a pleasant way, slightly creamy and clean. My first Hefe that is Dunkel and I like it a lot! The banana, clove, bubblegum flavors are quite laid back and just excellently balanced with the sweet wheat malts. The is brewing at a top level!

166 Ayinger Ur-Weisse Germany Dunkel Weizen 2.9

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

Aroma is Cotton Candy, Beeman's gum (yup I am that old), fruity banana esters, and some pepper. Appearance if a properly foggy orange-copper body topped by an only decent (for a weizen) off white head with mediocre retention and no lace, very disappointing. Mouth is slick but lacks the tingle that should be present, again disappointing. So, OK, first dunkel weizen for me, had a lot of hefes, which i am quite fond of. Should this beer be as sweet as it is??? Sweetness dominates that taste but it does have banana and clove lurking underneath as well as bubblegum, all appropriate except the sweetness? Slightly cloying floral finish to this which is odd, violets? Aftertaste is wet and fairly balanced, aftertaste may be that best part of this beer.

167 Schneider Weisse Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock Germany Eisbock 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Nose: Bubblegum, clove, banana. Appearance: dark brown body carmel color and head with short retention leaves the skim coat not much lace. Mouth: extremely fizzy of the tongue. Rather thin with a long finish. Flavor: starts pretty sweet with a little bit of bubble gum, candied fruits, toasted malts creep in, some raisin, there's some pepper in the finish the alcohol is warming and the finish is extremely long.

168 Ridgeway Criminally Bad Elf United Kingdom English Barleywine 3.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Aroma of apples and oranges and a touch of pepper. Modest head off white with large bubbles sits atop a hazy ice tea colored body. Minimal head retention and lacing; not surprising in a Barelywine. Mouthfeel is thin and fizzy. Flavor is not bad, fairly complex. Definately a sweet sour battle going on with a slightly offputting aftertaste that is a bit astringent...perhaps chemically. Has some citrus notes and some yeast on the mid pallet. The alcohol is quite present.

169 Saranac Pale Ale United States English Pale Ale 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Aroma liquorice, fruit, floral and a hint of citrsus and pine and toasted malt. Light fast tight head off white in color. Pours a beautiful clear medium copper color. Disipates rapidly leaving a lingering, nice lace. Mouthfeel is smooth, soft and tingly but a little watery. Plenty of bitter hops in the taste perhaps too much for style, mild malty sweetness, aftertaste a bit sour. An OK American Pale Ale offering but not really the English Style is proclaims. Very drinkable though.

170 Cisco Whales Tale Pale Ale United States English Pale Ale 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Very small in the nose when poured cold more aroma seems to develope after the head dissipates. Still not a strong aroma but nuts, citrus and bread detected along with a nicely done peppery aroma. Pours a great thick carmel colored head that does not last. Laces nicely with small bubbles continuing throughout the drink. A deep honey, light bronze cloudy body... an apealing looking brew that always leaves a bit of residue on the bottom of the glass. Mouthfeel is a touch chewy and a touch slippery...medium bodied, again its nice. The mild flavor suprised me. I hadn't read that they were crafting and English style Pale and was expecting (for no real reason) an American style. The hops are definatley present but not overwhelming. It has two very distinct tastes as it starts nutty and honey and then bang go the hops its bitter and acidic. Finish is a bit floral and goes tart at the end but leaves a clean after taste. Balance on this beer is spot on. A moderately complex brew, very well crafted and perfect for introducing a novice to hops. Great for sessions as well I suspect.

171 Gearys Pale Ale United States English Pale Ale 4.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

I always pick up a six or two when I visit the in-laws in Maine, this is the first time I took some home to review. Ton of malt and yeast in the nose when first poured, when that blows off it reveals a nose of floral hops, some citrus, some spice, a sweet very nice nose. A bit of a surprise with the light brown body, very clear and nice carbonation bubbling up the glass. I moderate slightly creamy off-white head that is fairly short lived but leaves a nice thick skim coat. Very nice lacing. A very full, for a pale ale, mouthfeel that is silky and creamy, really nicely done! There is a lot of sweetish malt in the taste but its very well balanced with an astringent hoppiness. There is also a fruity presence in the middle of the taste and the alcohol is also present, leaving a nice warming feeling. This may be the best pale I have encountered. This one is walking the line between an American Pale and an English ESB. Back when I was a kid, in 73, I spent a month in London. Ate exclusively at the pubs and drank a whole lot of "bitter". Didn't know what that really meant then, this was long before American craft brewing caught fire. It was exclusively on draught and I have no idea what brewers it was coming from, I have always wished I could taste it again now. I think this beer comes close, perhaps a bit maltier. It also took me a while to get into the swing of the beer being served less than cold. I'm gonna let the last of this Geary's warm a bit for a final tasting. Hmmm, it likes to be a bit on the warm side, the flavor really blossoms and gets more complex. The imported English yeast and malts (I am tasting a hint of the chocolate malt now)is shining through and, in my opinion, putting most American pales to shame! Great brew and great session brew!

172 Brooklyn Ale (Pennant Ale) United States English Pale Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Generally it seems to me that Pale Ales are underrated here, perhaps the style is just not very popular; milder than APA's or IPA's. the nose on this is a mix of big malts and cirtusy hops, fairly standard for the style. A nice clear light copper body with a good frothy off white head, moderate retention and lace. Good mouth, a light medium body slick, nice fiz. Carmel malt flavor provides a decent backbone with a stronger hops bite then might be expected, this tastes more like a light IPA than a Pale Ale. Finish is dry and clean, alcohol not present (and I miss it.) This is a very acceptable session brew but there are better American Pales out there, I like Geary's alot more. Nothing wrong here, just a bit unbalanced, not enough malt but very drinkable. Rerate: 12/12/08 What was I thinking/drinking? Lovely malt backbone, great hops balance at the end, really nice brew!!!!!

173 Gearys Hampshire Special Ale United States English Pale Ale 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Mild nose of malt and citrus sits. Beige head that is minimal with OK lace on top of dark copper body. Mouth is medium carbonation a touch flat. Some biscuit and chocolate in the flavor firmly hopped for an English Pale, deep ripe fruit, lots of pine in the finish, pretty good brew. 7% alcohol is well masked, there is a touch of warming at the end, finish is very clean and dry.

174 Harpoon UFO Pale Ale United States English Pale Ale 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Well this beer is pretty tasty, much more flavorful as it warms, but its not attempting to play by the English Pale Ale rules......what to do? Nose is IPA with a bit more malty tones, but lots of citrus and pine notes. Appearance may be a touch too pale, a very light honey colored foggy (UFO) body with a decent head and very nice lace. Nice mouth, soft and slippery and medium bodied. Good carbonation level though perhaps a bit too tingly for its style. Flavor is so so when cold, mostly hops, but it really rounds out as it warms and achieves balance with strong malt flavors filling the palette. An almost chemical bitterness, present when drunk cold, is gone once it warms a bit. Finish is dry and clean.

175 Firestone Walker DBA / Firestone Walker Double Barrel Ale United States English Pale Ale 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

More like a brown ale than an IPA, nice coper color body with a carmel colored head with good retentin and good lace.. Malty in the nose with toasted grain and caramel notes. Medium body with carbonation very well done. Taste is sweet for a pale ale again tastes like a brown ale. Lots of malt and hops just present mostly bittering not a lot of hop flavor. A good beer very drinkable but not really right for style.
