176 Goose Island 312 Urban Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Nice nose on this bad boy, quite hoppy for a Pale Ale, some pine and citrus, a hint of malt, could be a bit more malty in the nose. Pours a medium gold body with a very nice white head with good retention and very good lace. Mouth is a touch thin for the style with nice carbonation level. Flavor is not as bitter as the hops in the nose which are mostly aromatic, a bit more bitter and less butter than an english pale which right for the APA style. Moderate malt flavors a hint of sweet with a dry bitter finish with a touch of arming from the alcohol. This is nicely done!

178 Goose Island Bourbon County Stout United States Imperial Stout 4.4

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Nose: Brown sugar, raisin, black cherry, sage or oregano in the background. Pitch black body, small short-lived deep tan head with no lace. Lovely on the mouth...creamy, slippery, full, slight tingle, low carbonation. Bit of a sugar bomb or it would get 10 on flavor. Drinking the 2020 will revisit this same vintage in a few years, maybe the sweet will mellow. So ... molasses, warming alcohol, dark cherry, walnut, clean earth, fairly clean finish.

179 Goose Island Green Line Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Some malt and floral hops in the nose. Thin head with good lace over a still light copper body. Mouth is medium and perhaps a bit undercarbonated. This is a true pale, a bit on the English side for an American, which I like. Like a Gary's with a bit more flower. A bit buttery a bit funky, spot on.

180 Goose Island Honkers Ale United States Extra Special Bitter 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Sucked down a quick bottle at O'Hare airport, no glass. Hard to say about nose without a glass but the nose seemed a bit mild., same for appearance. Mouth was medium flavor was hoppy in bitterness but not in flavor. It actually did remind me a lot of the pints of bitter I used to get in London back in 73. Very drinkable, good session beer. Kicking it up a bit based on EyeCharts appearance and aroma notes.

181 Goose Island IPA United States IPA 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Malt and vanilla in the nose with some peppery hop notes and some apricot. Medium gold body with effervescence and crystal clarity is topped by a medium eggwhite head that leaves good lace. Mouth is creamy for an IPA and fairly full bodied. The flavor is timid but well balanced. Probably a great beer to introduce a friend to the IPA style for the first time. The hops are there and the malt is there its just very restrained, slightly bitter finish with a hint of sweetness as well. Somehow avoids tasting watered down, this has more taste than the recently popular lower alcohol style IPA's (which this isn't.) I wish they could make a nice flavorful IPA at 4.5% or less. At any rate this veer would be quite session able for an IPA, interesting beer.

(I will have to rerate with a new bottle at some point, this one must have been off, label Oct 2014, abc upped to 7%))A bit winey in the nose, lots of hay, vanilla, apple, licorice, subtle clove. Medium peachy/amber clear body topped with minimal head that lasts well and laces OK. Mouth is surprisingly creamy yet a bit light bodied. Oh God, the flavor... this is just not right!!!! Bubblegum and clove are followed immediately by a really nasty hit... what is it??? Motor oil? Aspirin? Ends with an artificial-tasting sour note. This is on Odd duck from Goose Island.

183 Goose Island Next Coast IPA United States IPA 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Moderate nose of pine, grass, barnyard funk, cracker, yeast. Clear medium gold body topped with serious pillow and very good lacing.Good tingle on the tongue, medium bodied. An unusual slight sourness for an IPA befitting of the funk in the nose, almost tastes like a pils. Touch of pine, touch of tobacco, bit of pepper. I'm not getting much of the tropical claimed. I like it but its very NOT an IPA profile.

184 Goose Island Ten Hills Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Floral hops in the nose, apple, citrus. Medium copper body with nice rising carbonation, topped by frothy white medium head and moderate lace. Mouth has nice carbonation level but is perhaps a touch thin in the body. OK, I am fighting a cold but a fairly mild flavor profile I think. Nicely bitter at the end with a slightly fizzy finish. Well balanced but could use a bit more malt for the style. Alcohol is well masked. Maybe a touch to fruity, a little buttery which is OK for style.

Almost no nose. Little head. Nice lace. Medium gold body. Medium body a bit undercarbonated. A bit heavy on hops or lite on the malt bill. Some sour in the finish not much grass or anything of interest. Airport price but a smoking bar.

187 Green Flash West Coast IPA United States IPA 4.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

This beer has changed recipe? This is now an Imperial IPA (they call it double) at 8.1 ABV and a whopping 95 IBU. Nose is peaches, pine, and floral. Orange-amber body that is not clear topped with minimal white head that leaves a solid skim coat and little lace. Mouth if full, creamy, and carbonation spot on. Good balance on the flavor. Big grain and big bitter with a slightly dry finish and alcohol present. Hints of peach, tobacco, and something green...., pine resin and bitter, did I say bitter? Its bitter!

Just God awful, didn't know it was AB till I tasted it. Aroma very minimal but acceptable (though not for a beer with Hop in the name. Decent clear copper color with poor head and really poor lace. I should have known when it said USDA organic istead of just organic that it was gonna be a bogus experience, oh well. Mouthfeel is non-existant... picture seltzer water gone not quite totally flat. Flavor! Complete crap! There is a tiny initial hit of hops that very rapidly turns to mettalic ugliness. It tastes like the old deoderants that had aluminum chlorhydrate as thier main ingredient.Somehow they have managed to give it an aftertaste that is even worse. This crap almost makes Bud taste good! How can a company like AB with tremendous financial resources make such a terrible terible brew? Certainly this went through some corporate taste testing program...who the hell were the tasters? Review this one quick. It won't be around long!

Good night Irene. Ok, got this at the local, thought it was an IPA...is not, its a GD lager! Nose is tropical, medium amber body, good head good lace. Mouth is sticky, thick, full bodied. Very sting malt backbone over which are presented killer hops notes that are mostly tropical, deep ripe fruit. Alcohol slightly present and very warming. CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS A LAGER!!! Amazing brew, perhaps top three!

190 Grey Sail Brewing Flagship United States Cream Ale 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Malt and vanilla in the nose , a bit of grass, and with slight hint of floral and pine notes. Very nice thick white head over a deep golden body, great retention and nice lace. Mouth is medium bodied on the light side and well balanced on the various palettes. it is a bit creamy. Carbonation is spot on. Flavor is VERY mild and very nicely balanced. (OK, not my favorite style but reviewing it for what it is.) Starts with a hint of sweet, goes to a bit of sour, touch of bittering in the finish. Incredibly dry at the end with almost zero aftertaste. While I have said this before about bad beers in mean it nicely in this case, "best drink of water you will ever have." At a 4.9 abv, totally masked, this would be highly sessionable. 15 minutes later the is still a nice skim coat and decent lace. Not at all my style but really well crafted. Taste no adjuncts. What most US macros (although this is not) ought to be.

Mose of pine that turns to grass and honey. Hazy yellow body with moderate shirt-lived head and no lace. Mouth is medium bodied and over-fizzy. Starts with hints of grass that soon turns sour and bitter, not in an overly pleasant way. Aftertaste is medicinal.

192 Grey Sail Brewing Pour Judgement IPA United States IPA 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Mild but lasting nose of mountain wild flowers, clover honey, and a hint of ripe tropical fruit. Pours a surprisingly cloudy pale peach body with a very good white head that lasts and laces very well, and leaves some debris on the bottom of the glass....is this unfiltered??? I don't think so but don't know which makes it very tuff to grade. Mouth is VERY creamy for an IPA, close to full bodied yet finishes a bit thin, interesting and a nice change of pace. Flavor is subtle. Some hints of honey, the hops are fairly neutral and bittering. The Eureka! hop is interesting, slightly peachy and leads to a very very dry finish. Wonder what the "German"malt bill is here, almost seems like a pils malt. All in all a unique IPA that remains true to the style.

193 Gritty McDuffs Maine's Best IPA United States IPA 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

I notice that there are reviews of Gritty McDuff's IPA from 5 or so years ago, suspect that this is a name change, and perhaps also a recipe change. Nose is standard IPA, mostly citrus and pine with very little else. A medium to darkish amber body is topped by an nice off white head that has good retention and leaves lovely lace. Mouth is fairly full bodied for an IPA, carbonation perhaps a bit low but acceptable. Good flavor on this one, nothing complicated but pretty spot on for the style, some pepper, some lemon, some pine, and big ole bitter finish. For an eastern IPA this one is hoppy! Nice job from a brewery with a silly name and very drinkable even for hop heads.

195 Grolsch Premium Lager Netherlands Pale Lager 2.5

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 5

Predominant hay in the nose with some bread and light citrus developing. Possibly corn and to me a bit skunky smelling. Pours a verly pale gold with a creamy, almost yeasty looking head the dssipates rapidly leaving a moderate lace. Mouthfeel is water and somehow I get just a hint of a gritty feeling. Finishes with a VERY dry feeling. Flavor is uncomplicated and primarly sour with moderate bitter hops. Aftertaste is a sour that is not particularly appealing and a bit skunky. I'm not quite sure what a really good pale lager should taste like but I do hope this is not it. A simple brew too sour for a decent session beer. I've always liked the cap though, makes a great salad dressing container!

196 Guinness Draught Ireland Dry Stout 3.2

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Nota Lita nose... Deep brown body, Carmel colored head nitro charged foamy lace. Thin for a stout. Gonna let warm before rating flavor but strikes me is not as good as a draft. Little charcoal from the dark malts, some roasted coffee almost playing with sweet in the middle a little milk lactose. It's Guinness.

197 Guinness Nitro IPA Ireland IPA 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Mild nose for an IPA, pine and sour fruit. Well, yes, its pretty in a Guinness widget sort of way. Huge head, good lace medium copper body. Mouth due to nitro widget is very creamy, odd for a so-called (we will get to that) IPA but fun. Not very bitter even with 5 hops involved (3 of them for dry hopping) more like a Pale than an IPA. Main flavor is coming from what I suspect is a proprietary yeast, a flavor detected in their stout as well. Good amount of roasted malt in the flavor. Very drinkable and a nice change of pace.

198 Guinness Stout Ireland Dry Stout 2.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

Druaght in the bottle. The pour may be the best thing about this brew. I love watching the carbonation cascade down the sides to the bottom of the glass and then build up to a truely creamy, dark ivory head. The stout itself is a VERY deep brown and completley opaque. The lace is, if you can even call it that, a really thick and lovely foam residue on the sides of the glass. The head lasts forever. This beer has almost NO nose. Mouthfeel is suprisingly thin and a touch slimy. Flavor is uncomplicated. It hits sweet-sour with a significant amount of pine tar and rotted fruit and finishes sour. This is not as deep a flavor as I recall from past forced draughts. My English friends tell me the forced here is not as good as in England and that in England its not as good as in Ireland. The bottle says serve it very cold. I find that suprising and that may be contributing to the lack of depth and flavor. I will wait a bit and allow it to warm before giving this stout the poor rating it appears to be heading towards......Is gotten a bit better as it warms; a touch of coffee and oranges coming through and the sweet-sour is becoming more appealing. I hesitate to rate this bottle as I know it is so much better on draught. But bottle it is and bad it is!

199 HaandBryggeriet Hesjeøl Norway Saison 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

COMPLETE REVISON 11/2016 I suppose if you have to fit its into a category Saison is OK, but really thinks a "traditional" ale. Very unusual nose, licorice, ripe fruit, grass. Not quite clear pale apricot colored body topped with good and long lasting head and OK lace. Mouth is a medium with good fiz. Flavor is so unusual its hard to read. Tastes of rye, some funk, lightly smoked malts, great battering finish very dry. Truly unfiltered it left a serious amount of gunk in the bottom of the bottle. I really really loved this beer.

200 Hacker-Pschorr Hefe Weisse Germany Hefeweizen 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Yummy, another good hefe! Opening nose of a typical hefe lotta tropical fruit and vanilla and bread and spice. TAstes like it smells with a soft slippery mouth feel. Pours a deep foggy golden amber with a big frothy head that disaptes rapidly, doesn't lace very well. Interesting, after it warms the character changes. The nose goes more towards spice and the hops begin to come out in the flavor, it becomes more complex.it hits sweet and sour and leaves a slightly bitter hopsy aftertaste. Not my very favorite hefe but variety is the spice of life. Had this tongiht with a spicy sweet Thai Cury and it paired better than I expected though, with theat particular meal, a stronger hops finishmight have been nicer.
