The last bit about craft beer accounting for approx. 10% of the market share as proof that American beer is bland is rather misleading. There may be billions of dollars spent each year on bland beer, but those billions are going to a very small collection (maybe a dozen or two?) of brand names. Whereas the 11% represents thousands of different brands. On a brewer-by-brewer basis, there is a lot more flavorful beer produced under a multitude of different brands. If the article had not approached the topic as "why is American beer bland" but instead as "why do Americans buy bland beer," then there would be no argument.

Bland beer is not unique to the US. As far as I can tell, the most popular beers in most countries are some form of pale lager. http://big.assets.huffingtonpost.com/beer-world-map-3000-full-web.jpg
Agreed! Having a bland beer is one of the characteristics of a real country... that and an airline.

[:D] I'm deliberately cultivating a taste for bland light beers...does that make me a real American?
