Another busy beer tour
General Beer Discussion by PFOXYJOHN
Last week travelling through London, Durham & Edinburgh found me drinking 50 different beers from 43 different breweries in 24 different pubs (yes, I kept track and posted on Untapped). Similar to many trips I’ve taken in the past, but I had intended to “take it easy” on this one. My wife was along and I really wanted to do things I knew she would enjoy - not that we didn’t have a GREAT time and I think she would agree. But, it got me to thinking about what is this thing I have going on with beer, should I be concerned about that relationship, and what - if anything - I should do about it? So what is this thing? How do others see it – for me, and for yourself? An interest[:)], a hobby[8D], a passion[:p], an obsession[}:)], an addiction[B)], or what? [8]

Only problem is that these places are all 6-7hrs from Berlin.... so we need some more info about range from Berlin. For some reason, I've still yet to hit Weihenstephaner, despite staying there often before flying home the next morning..... Gotta do that, Freising is where the Munich airport is.....

I'd make a big effort to get to Ayinger if I was even remotely close. Schneider and Weihenstephaner, too.

Oh yeah! Where's Schlenkerla in relation to where you'll be?

Hopefully we'll hear more today about where he'll be. But, Bamberg is probably about 4+hrs from Berlin. It is the closest of places to Berlin that I can speak to/recommend. It is a fabulous town. Schlenkerla was quite good fun. There were actually another ~10 or so Rauch breweries in town too.

I hear Berlin has changed quite a bit since I was there last. A friend recently interviewed a guy who owns a beer shop in Berlin for a blog post about the past and present of German beer. He's trying to bring the true variety of German beer back to Berlin because most shops sell the same handful of beers that all come from about 4 breweries. Here's a link to his website and his little beer-rating project/blog. http://hopfenmalz.de/ http://aktiongutesbier.de/

While your trip sounds awesome and is sure to have great beer moments, this limits my ability to provide first hand help. Some 40 trips to Deutschland but never to Berlin. Good luck and don't forget to mix in some great historical sites. I made that mistake early on in my overseas travels all in the name of beer. I missed out on some great WWI and II learning and awe moments.
