http://camravancouver.ca/ The Alibi Room is the place to be as stated previously During BC's Craft Beer week, St. Augustine's was voted best beer bar in the city. A lot of RateBeerians hail from Vancouver and spend a lot of time at those two places..

Thanks for the suggestions BPs. Guess I'll be going next week instead. But I'll be sure to check out those places yall mentioned. Anybody in the Van city area who wants to meet up, let me know! Also what's this nonsense about being taxed for beer going across the CA/US border? Is it only above a certain amount of bottles?

It depends on the border guard you run into. The first litre of alcohol is supposed to be duty free. Some border guards will tax on the dollar value (some will be anal and ask for receipts), some will tax you on the volume and ask to count the bottles, and still others will simply ask if you have anything to declare, and if you say 'a couple of cases of beer' they'll waive the tax and pass you through. I've had all three happen to me at the BC/Washington border many times. Usually as long as you declare it, they just waive you through, US border guards in Washington are more interested in marijuana and guns than alcohol. All the 'legal' information is here http://www.usitc.gov/publications/docs/tata/hts/bychapter/1000C22.pdf

Brewery Creek on Main Street is where you want to buy beer, and if you are in Surrey the Central City Liquor Store has a wicked selection of BC beers. I brought a case of Mother of all Storms across and had to pay $180 in Tax, mostly because I only crossed for 18 minutes... How long are you across for, and I may be in Van that day

Did you bring the beer INTO Canada, or into the US? The taxes paid by Canadians to bring beer back from the US are a lot more than the taxes to go the other way. I assume Phish was referring to bringing beer from BC to the US. So, he shouldn't be paying anywhere near $180. When I was going to school in the US, I was never asked for duty when taking beer (or swill as it was 15-20 years ago) with me. I always declared it (Buffalo or Detroit) as well.

This is true, I got hit coming this way. Never been asked going the other way, I guess they assumed our beer is too expensive so why would anyone take it over? Still, I always declare, as it is better safe paying a bit of tax than a larger fine, in my books anyways.
