I pack stuff in my checked bags (that go in the cargo hold) and have never had one 'splode (or otherwise break)...though corked bottles worry me every time. Cans and capped bottles should be fine. I use clothes, bubble wrap and/or cardboard. Just make sure they're padded well, and expect your bag to be searched by TSA.
