General Beer Discussion by PHISHPOND417
The end of next month we're going on a short trip to Europe. We will be able to spend a few days in each town. Any recommendations on beer places stops along the way or cheap spots to stay would be much appreciated! I was hoping to meet up with the great HeddyMuggz in Stuttgart. But don't know if it's going to happen. Any suggestions just in case?

Sounds fun - unfortunately I can't offer any suggestions... my Euro-drinking has been in Graffenwohr, Stuttgart, Kaiserslautern & Rothenburg, Germany; and numerous other places not on your list.
My favorites: Brouwerij t'IJ - Amstersdam In De Wildeman - Amsterdam Brasserie Cantillon Brouwerij - Brussels A La Mort Subite - Brussels Estaminet Toone - Brussels Het Waterhuis aan de Bierkant - Ghent Staminee de Garre - Brugge ’t Brugs Beertje - Brugge (disclaimer: they were closed when I was there but made the favorites list just by looking in the window and salivating)

This place is no more. Webshop closed and people who visited said the place looks very closed these days. A shame, as it was a good shop. I'll come back with some places in Belgium once I have a bit more time and can think it through, probably Sunday this week, when all theater stuff incl. the opening night is over.

Between Amsterdam and Weisbaden, I would highly recommend Dusseldorf and/or Cologne. If you're interested after you hear all of the suggestions, drop me a beermail, and I can elaborate on more locations. I think the top place or two from each city would be: Dusseldorf: Zum Schlüssel Cologne: Ausschank Pfaffen Brauerei Max Päffgen You really can't say you've tried altbier or Koelsch unless you've had it fresh from those two cities. It's a unique experience, so I'd definitely recommend hitting it while there. A big old Belgian beer ain't that much different in Belgium than it is in a bottle in the US. You can't bottle the more delicate styles, so definitely hit 'em if you can. I've stayed in Weisbaden before ahead of flights out of Frankfurt. Not much happening there. A theatre town associated with the wine of the area rather than the beer. Most of the local high quality wines were white too, which didn't excite me at the time. The best I found, no idea if still open: http://beerpal.com/Yours-Sports-Bar,-Weisbaden-Retailer/4651/

Nice! Thanks for all the tips. Very much appreciated and keep 'em coming. Eagle, definitely thought of stopping is Dusseldorf but a German friend of mine persuaded me not to. I will still consider it Stuttgart is looking more like a reality these days. I don't want to rush the trip since I don't get over to Europe a whole lot. Trying to take my time and spend as many days, in the cities I mentioned, as possible.

Regrettably, I can't remember the name of any place that I was in Stuttgart. A) I had been drinking B) that was before I really started keeping up with such things - circa 2002-2003. Sorry. But I do look forward to hearing about the trip. Prost!

I'm sitting in the foyer of my hostel in Utrecht,Netherlands and I have to say, I will never look at Belgian beer the same. The beer we know and love at home and are willing to spend $7/8 a 12 oz. pour for is on draught or bottle for 2 or 3 Euro tops here. It is possible to have a palate overload from consecutive days of strong Belgian and Dutch bier. Actually looking forward to drinking wine in a few days.

I totally forgot to write these down before I left. So now that I left Belgium and am headed outta Holland tomorrow, it's interesting to look at you recommendations. When at Staminee de Garre, Brittany and I said almost at the same time- John would love this place. Good to know you visited it. :)
