Must-Haves in the Kansas City Area?
General Beer Discussion by FARGINGBASTIGE6
Anyone familiar with good beer/places to have a beer in the Kansas City area? I'll probably hit the High Noon Saloon & Brewery in Leavenworth - been there before and have to pass right by it. I'm also considering McCoy's Public House in KC and possibly the Gordon Biersch, but I'd like to get some first-hands accounts if possible. Thanks.

Go to Free State in Lawrence. About the same distance from KC as High Noon in Leavenworth is. I would recommend both McCoy's and 75th Street in KCMO. Gordon Biersch is fine, if you like their style of beers (as I do). They have a new location in Leawood too, if you're close to there. If you are looking for bottle shops, I'd recommend Gomer's, Lukas, or Royal. They all have multiple locations. If you need more help, let me know. I live in the KC area and can help you out.

CF, are you going to eat some of that famous KC BBQ while out there? [:p] Suds, tell us what you really think of Royal.

BBQ is high on my priority list - and now that I know they have a Flying Saucer (already plugged the address into my GPS), it is too. Likewise, I think I'll skip Royal. [;)]

A couple of great nights at the Flying Saucer... the guys that I were traveling with had never been (or heard of) it, and they were hooked. Barbeque... thankfully I'm not due for a physical exam for a while because I'm sure my blood sugar level and cholesterol are way outta whack. All Slabbed Up is a small BBQ joint on the main drag through Lansing and Leavenworth and a worthy stop. Ribs, brisket and pork are all outstanding... and their fries have little bits of fried onion mixed in... tasty. Oklahoma Joe's & Papa Bob's are worthy as well. No Ultimate Destroyer Challenge for me, but good food.
The liquor store I used to work at just hired a girl who was manager at Royal for ten years. I've even been to Royal, and I agree it's a dump.

Lukas, Gomers and even Riverside Red X have surpassed it in the KC area. They did have old dusty brews and at a high price the times I went. I didn't love the place, but I didn't hate it either. To be fair, I haven't been in over a year.
