anyone here suffer from nasal allergies?

General Beer Discussion by MYKE

I put this thread in the General Beer discussion because my question directly relates to beer vis-a-vis how does your allergies affect your sniffing the beer ie: discerning it's aromas? and what have you done done to combat this problem? I find that with my constantly blocked nose I have a very hard time with aromas.

That's really odd that when your nose is blocked you can't pick up aromas as well. My sense of smell improves when I plug my nose. If it's giving you problems, you could try blowing your nose, Kleenex makes a wonderful range of products for this purpose. If you're feeling cheap though, you could use your index finger, or maybe even your pinky to dislodge offending blockages. Hope this helps.
I've tried all that doesn't help. I suffer from Perrenial Rhinitis which is basically sneezing fits followed by a constantly itchy nose year round from anything airborne. The crappier beers I can descern their badness no problem but the well done beers it all depends. Most of the time I cannot smell a thing.
Have you tried putting the beer in a neti pot?

LOL I saw a commercial for the neti pot once. Weird. I'm getting beat up this week by allergies in Portland because it stopped raining, but I only get a little stuffy. My eyes are what takes the punishment. That would suck if you can't smell most of the year. I know I can't really rate a beer if I'm blocked up with a cold. Maybe you should try reincarnation as a better man.

myke, you didn't come here for sympathy, did you? Switch to bourbon. The vapors clear your sinuses quickly and the alcohol makes you forget why you cared about being able to smell in the first place. Pint for pint, bourbon is more likely to help you with your reincarnation objective by speeding up your eventual demise. Good luck!

I have seasonal allergies with sinus pressure, stuffy nose and itchy, watery eyes. I have found that generic Zyrtec really helps me. I think that generic Allegra recently was released. My nose gets less sensitive, but with the medication, I can usually get enough useful aroma to enjoy the beer.

I've never really been able to smell very much. Don't have much of a sense of taste either. All this beer sampling has helped develop a sense of taste, but alas, the olfactory apparatus is still depressingly subpar. And yes...I do have allergies now that I live in California. Never had them before I moved here. Little did I know while growing up in NJ that all this time I was allergic to sage and rabbitbrush, both of which cover the landscape here.

Buy some local honey and use it frequently, couple table spoons a day. It's a homeopathic remedy. I did that last winter and its good. also, check out the free 20 min video at tapping.com it works and its awesome. these are all natural remedies and work the best. I personally recommend them. dont do drugs, stay in school
