Aecht Schlenkerla Helles Lagerbier

Beer Discussion by SLOWRUNNER77

BeerPal Notice: This topic was created for discussion of the beer Aecht Schlenkerla Helles Lagerbier. misclassed as a Ruachbier. from the label... “Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. from ratebeer: Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

How does it obtain it's "subtle smokiness" I wonder.

I assume they use the same yeast as the urbock and marzen, so when they repitch I'm sure there's a small volume of rauchbier that makes it into this beer, and since it's such a light style of beer, that rauch flavor is going to come through.

I always taste/tasted fish (specifically smoke salmon) in Alaskan Smoked Porter. For years I thought I was imagining things...but they brew it in a fish hatchery. I'm not crazy I tell you!!! Anyway, I just didn't think a non-smoked beer fits the rauch style...and the BP despised Ratebeer puts it under Helles as well...that's all.

from what i was told it actually gets its smoke flavour from the brew equipment, they clean it but the smoke is so powerful that the smokiness never goes away...

Plausible. Whatever they do, every freaking beer they brew is amazingly tasty. I want to go to Bamberg! pfoxyjohn said he'd meet us over there - who's in?! [:D]

Especially rubber hoses the beer is transferred through... probably not easy to get smoke flavor out of those.

GAAA!!! Craft Reno just got all of the Shlenkera beers on this site (save for the fiest) in all at once...3 of the 5 are even in mini-kegs. I always wet myself when i saw that beautiful corner of the beer cooler. A FANtastic ribs and smoked beer tasting is in the works. So happy! Thanks John for sending me my first or I may not have even noticed these!
