Musical Brewerys for Bass and Boddingtons
General Beer Discussion by OIZNOP
Breaking news...Discovered in AAB magazine and on-line.
The corporate conglomerate Interbrew has announced it will be closing the Boddington's Brewery at Strangeways Manchester, and move production of the pub ale to Wales, Scotland and to Lancashire in nortwest England. 55 jobs will be lost as a result.
news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/manchester/4014653.stm
According to Roger Protz of AAB Magazine, Boddingtons accounts for only 10% of Interbrew's total production. Boddington's has been brewed in Manchester for the last 224 years, and was purchased by Interbrew in 2000.
(I had no idea that Interbrew had it's wick dipped into Boddingtons....I sincerely hope this is not the beginning of the end!)
Production of Bass Ale will be brewed by the Martson's Brewery of Burton-on-Trent, England....Prior to this, Bass was owned by Coors.

Yup, they're bastards for shutting that historical brewery down. The best way to prevent this type of travesty again, though, is to not sell your brewery to a conglomerate whose sole purpose is to make money for their shareholders. Anyone remember the story of Pierre Celis and those corn-cookin' M.F.'ers at Miller?
In Reply To #1 And THIS, my friends, is why I refuse to drink anything Inbev. They can take their Stella, Leffe, Bass, Beck's and Hoegaarden and shove it. No other conglomerate has taken over and shut down as many great breweries as Inbev. Never cared for Boddington's, but it's still a son of a bitch that Inbev bought 'em out and closed 'em. I know several other beer nuts who are also boycotting Inbev. If you don't like their business practices, I strongly urge you to join the boycott. They haven't really attacked North America yet, although they do own Rolling Rock and Labatt now. Let's just hope they leave it at those two and stay the fuck out. I too was sad to see the Celis family get nixed by Miller. I was actually surprised that Miller, for the most part, let them do whatever they wanted at the brewery, and left it a family brewery for as long as they did. Oh well, Pierre Celis is a legend, no matter where he gets shut down, he'll just pop back up again somewhere else.

My question is will this spell the end of Boddington's as we know it??....Is it primed for extinction by this evil empire???.....That would really suck!

P.S. This is what happens in business...People sell out....Capitalism in the modern world.....That's the way it is!.....I don't really mind stuff like this happening, unless the product suffers or becomes a sacraficial lamb as a result.....I pray that that won't be the case!

Damn sorry bout the folks that lose the jobs, but Boddingtons is no great lose to the ale world. InBev is just another example of our beloved capitalism. It is the way of the world, sell out and reep much geld. Brewing is a business period. The product is, at least most of the time, a means to $, nothing more . Sad but true.
As a side note here in the Gross Bier Vass, if you stay small no prob, you can make it. Get huge, you can make it. Be midsized and you will be taken over. Biblical...
