Subpar bbq

Non-Beer Discussion by HEEMER77

So I visited a local bbq joint that will be on Man vs Food next week and I was not impressed. I have recently had a rash of bbq that failed to impress me. My current gold standard is Arthur Bryant's in KC. I guess my rambling point is that it is hard to find great bbq. btw - watch Man vs Food next week if you want to see some Des Moines foodie action. I know he visited the High Life Lounge too, a great retro style bar that only serves macro brews that were available in the 1970's and the decor is all 70's era. The food is fantastic and cheap, broasted chicken is awesome. And right next door is a fantastic beer bar. Easily the best between Chicago and KC.

heemer, some of the shacks, joints and holes-in-the-wall are by far the best places to get Q. Even some of the roadside smokers are very worthy. Don't have to be fancy schmancy for good stuff. I'd say some of the very best BBQ places are dives. Q ain't high brow fo sho.

Agreed. It's just funny how places that most seem to mention are often not very good, just better at getting their name out there.

Southend Brewery & Smokehouse in Charleston, SC - this cannot be indicative (I know damn well its not) Carolina-style BBQ. The texture of the meat was of a consistency not of this world, the sauce was bland with no hint of the vinegar bite... and the beer, hell it wasn't even that good - see reviews. A real bummer.

It's a franchise out of Charlotte, apparently not very good. And their beers not very good either, eh Curtis? Dude, you shoulda stuck with seafood and low-country grub in CharlesTown.[;)] I'm sure there is good Q all over the Carolinas - that just isn't it. I will remember that on my next visit to Chas'ton - "Do NOT eat at SouthEnd."

I would say the only proper CHOPPED BBQ is from NC...[:D] Clash, have you been pulling your pork again?[;)] The pigs in that area are revered and highly prized, sometimes even married into wealthy families. Royal pigs that are pampered are usually the most tasty and tender.

fb, maybe the only sub-par meal you had in Charleston? <That place is off the chart for good food and restaurants for certain.

Ok, so the other place that some of the locals weren't sure about being open anymore in DM is definitely closed. However, that is ok with me, since I have a local place that I love! [:p]
