12 oz or bomber?

General Beer Discussion by DOULOS31

I've read some reviews where some folks claim that beer tastes different depending on the size of bottle it is in. Is there a difference, tastewise, between beer in a bomber sized bottle or a standard 12 oz? Sometimes I think there is, but then again, I might be nuts.

Sometimes the bigger bottles are bottle conditioned, where as the 12 oz bottles are force carbonated. Also, some breweries will bottle the bombers or champagne bottles, and contract out the 12 ounce bottles. You can see huge differences with breweries that do this (Newport Storm anyone?). With aging beer, the bigger bottles age faster, and usually better as well, due to a couple reasons. For the most part though, I'd guess the differences you detect are psychological more than anything.

On my recent trip to Quebec City, Chopz and I went to this place called "Auberges des Douceurs Belges" to try out different Belgium beers that we can't get in our area. As we were leaving got to chatting with the owner of the place, who told us that the bigger the bottle the better the beer (in general), so if you've got the option of going for the bigger one, go for it. I think it's mostly for the craft beers and not for the swilly stuff, I never noticed a difference on the swill, but definitely noticed one on the Belgium type beers as is the same for the Unibroue stuff. The only thing I can think of is oxidation. A 1.5L is going to have much more beer per open space, as opposed to a 12oz. Possibly more chance of oxidation with smaller bottles over time? Facto'
