Just curious..

Website Comments by RAINMAN

A neat feature would be able to sort my inventory by any of the colum headers - in particular by rating. Is this possible? Thanks!

Yes it is rainman. All you need to do is click on the title heading and it will sort the ratings. For example, if you click the heading "ratings" it will sort your inventory from the highest rated to the lowest. It is just a matter of point and click and they will be sorted. This is also true for all the other headings in your inventory page. If you have anymore questions or concerns, just post another response in this thread and we will be able to help you. By the way, welcome to the beerpal community! [:D]

Well, that was my assumption - but my list doesn't actually sort when I click on any of the headers. Could be one of the beers on my list has non-standard data somehow? And thanks for having me, I'm looking forward to drinking more beer :)

Expand your whole list of brews you have drank and then the headings will be underlined. Then, this is when you can sort your brews. You may be trying to sort them without clicking the "view all reviews" on your personal page. If you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to ask. [:D]

Thanks Stale. My reviews seem to sort fine by the available headers, it is my inventory that won't. When I first go to the inventory, it is sorted alphabetically. If I click on any of the other headers, the sort changes, but it is still not sorted in any order or ranking highest to lowest - it's just mixed and no longer alphabetical. If I click on the beer header it does resort back to alphabetical, but I was hoping it could be sorted by styles, rankings, dates, etc.

Hey, rainman! I have the same interest in sorting (see the "What else are you a geek in besides beer?" thread), and I will tell you how I worked around the "obstacle" posed by some of the site function limits. When I am shopping for a mixed case for the Killer Case Club (see that thread), I load up my beer options in the inventory. I want to see the BeerPal rating and the style of each selection so I can evaluate the quality of each and make some changes for a higher average rating or a wider mix of styles. Then I sweep my cursor over the whole list, copy it, and paste it into Excel. Within Excel, I can really have fun. I can sort on every column, but I can also add columns and link to tables and make pivot charts. I get to mess around with databases and spreadsheets at work, so I have picked up some simple analysis techniques. I can sort all the beers I've tried and rated to see how well beers on the inventory would help me fill gaps in styles, states, or countries. That's useful. This practice also helps me spot high-payoff ratings when I want to reduce my backlog. For example, before I review my 40th IPA, I might want to review my first gruit or my first beer brewed in Idaho, or, best yet, the gruit from Idaho. But this copy and paste technique is a work-around. To your original point, yes, being able to do all the sorting within the site would be a neat feature. I am not a programmer, so i don't know how hard it would be to add the feature. And I don't know how much processing power it would take to make this work on a Flash's server if lots of people wanted to do it. Whether it's possible is probably not the right question--surely it is technically possible. But what if making it possible for the few that want it caused another, more popular feature, such as searching through the vault, to slow way down? That's a poor tradeoff. If that's the constraint, then try the download method. And let us know how well it worked for you.

That is absolutely a simple enough fix. I am excel literate, so no problem!

A fellow Excel master. Cool! I thought there was something different about you, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it....
