no question for me it's a tie: roger waters of pink floyd and mel schacher of grand funk.

I'm with you 100% on the first three if the style is rock. Jazz on the other hand, adds some new twists: Jaco Pastoria John Patitucci

I have to add Cliff Burton (R.I.P) of MetallicA in there, he could get sounds out of his bass that nobody could have thought possible or simply would have thought of doing. In my opinion Cliff did to the bass what Jimmy Hendrix did to the guitar.
i'd say geddy from the very first album "rush". that bass line from "take a friend" is absolutely phenomonal. you wind up playing air bass more w/ song than air guitar or air drums, imo.

S8N buddy, i can't believe either of us forgot steve harris.
Well if we're talking metal, we should also add Steve DiGiorgio (Sadus, Testament, Death...) Six string fretless, he was also the touring bassist for beleive it or not "Cher"!! Steve's got wicked talent, he really made Sadus stick out from some of the other speed/thrash metal bands around.
