Pit Bull Terriers
Non-Beer Discussion by COTTRELL
My avatar got me to thinking. Denver banned Pit Bull terriers, anyone else think these things should be banned nation wide? I'm sure they can be nice, but it doesn't take much for them to snap. And how do you stop them once they start attacking? Good luck. I have a schnauzer, and I can say that if he got one slap of quills to his face, he'd stay the hell away from porcupines. Bull Terrier? Nope, he keeps going until the porcupine runs out of quills. Anyone see the issue here? Say a little kid provokes the pup into attacking (the neighborhood kids tease our dog every now and then), now what? How do you stop a dog that won't even stop for a face full of needles? Anyone read about the black lab that saved a sixth grader from a pit bull in Chicago not too long ago? The owner of the black lab came home, the pit bull jumped on her car hood, and she quickly scrambled inside. It was morning, and kids were coming outside for the bus. The owner of the black lab yells out the window warning the kids and one boy freezes up. Guess what happens next? "The pit bull first latched onto the boy's groin, and then bit into his ankle, police said. His 9-year-old sister, who was walking with him, began swatting at the dog with her book bag. The boy yelled for his sister to run away so she wouldn't get hurt. That's when Montiel and her son went for the door to help." [:0] The black lab rushes out of the house, and attacks the pit bull, pit bull latches onto the labs neck, the lab drags it back into the house. BUT WAIT! There's more.... The cops show up, and confront the dog. The dog lunges at the cops, the cops shoot. They fire at least four shots at the dog, the dog drops. Then the dog gets back up and lunges again. The cops shoot again, smoke detectors go off, the dog lay with 3 shots to the head, one to the neck, and 3 more in it's body. Oh, and it had to be euthanized at an animal clinic. So to sum it all up for those still reading... the dog attacks a child unprovoked, gets shot 7 times, 3 times in the head, and still lives. This is only one of many similar stories, these dogs need to go. Why keep a breed like this around when there's a possibility of them attacking an innocent child, and having no way of stopping it. Unless you have a very brave black lab with you....

I agree whole heartedly. At a minimum I think these dogs should have to be licensed like a gun. I myself, cannot see why these dogs are aloud to walk this earth, because they are obviously too dangerous for the average dog owner to take care. I say shoot first, then ask if hes nice... Newkie[}:)]
I am not defending people who own Pit-Bull's or Rottweiler's by any means, but I have known a few who own these dogs and they are very affectionate. For the most part these dogs can be very dangerous and something needs to be done. What exactly I am not sure of...but something. I own an English Mastiff that weighs in at around 200 lbs. The neighborhood kids love to come over and play with him, he love it too. But if anyone entered my backyard or house uninvited I'm not sure what he would do. He may swallow them whole or just take a few pieces at a time or just lick them to death. No one as ever tried!
Here is a list from a CBS site about biting breeds: Potentially aggressive breeds: * Llasa Apso: can be cranky with kids * Toy poodles: bite out of self defense * Dachsunds: not very patient * Rhodesian Ridgebacks: very dominant breed * Miniature Pinschers: "big dog" mindset in little body * Pekinese: intolerant * Chihuahuas: prefer adults, not tolerant of kids * Chow Chow: one-person dogs, bite without warning * Giant Schnauzers: very dominant breed, will even challenge adults * Old English Sheep Dog: very protective of owner * Cocker Spaniel: very protective of owner * Rottweilers: very protective Typically gentle breeds that have "bad boy" reputations: * German Shepherd: great with kids * Bulldog: gentle, playful * Rottweilers: can be gentle, affectionate * Great Danes: gentle, affectionate * Boxers: good with kids * Mastiffs-very docile All dogs can and will bite you. I personally own terriers of all sizes, they damn sure will bite. Best way to avoid being bitten? Always carry a hand gun. Period. P.S. If anything needs banning it is irresponsible owners. When I was a lad, the Dobbie had the same rep as the bull/terrier/staforshire breeds have now.
Ban them. It's really quite simple. If you already own a lovable pooch, grandfather it in, but no further purchases in the States. There's no reason that someone needs to have a pit bull, there are plenty of other breeds out there that don't have vice grips for jaws, and the temper and aggression of Mike Tyson. As per Brad's post, I definitely agree on some of those dogs on the bad reputation list. Rottweilers are really cool dogs, I've known several and all of them were like big ol' teddy bears. Too bad that the species became a favorite in the dog fighting rings. [:(]
