General Beer Discussion by FREEBIRD

I was always taught too never judge a book by it's cover. But as I shop around for new beers to try, some of the labels just don't have that eye-catching appeal that one would hope to find in a quality beer. Unless a beer is recommended by a person that I trust as far as their judgement of beers go or I have read favorable reviews of a beer (esp. here on Beerpal), I probably won't try it based on it's label. Shame on me! Because I have had beers with questionable labels, but excellent beer.

I think the ipswich IPA looks like a stupid label, but it was damn tasty. I also thought the Hops Devil bottle looks stupid, but that is a decent beer.

To me, Sierra Nevada has wierd lables. Pastels and neons just don't seem to belong on a beer.

In Reply To #1 The best labels in the world, by far, are those of Unibroue. The art that goes into these labels is incredible. Of course, I didn't try these beers because of labels, but it's an added bonus.

Did you know that you can now buy special edition Unibroue beers with a small replica painting of the nice pictures you see on their bottles ? I think you can get the info on their website. The paintings are very nice, but they are small. Good for the bathroom....

Ya the Unibroue labels are little works of art and I'll have to check that out, not that I need any more breweriana around here! Lots of good labels out there though. The Hobgoblin ale I had the other night had a really cool label but the beer was just so-so.
