No Respect

General Beer Discussion by JOHNC

It's frustrating that in many circles, beer gets no respect. I just received the newletter from Hi Time Cellars (www.hitimewine.net) in the mail. It's the size of a supermarket tabloid (12" x 10", 30cm x 25cm) printed like a newspaper & it's 44 pages long. There is ONE mention of in a small 3" square (7.5cm x 7.5cm) ad for an IPA tasting they're having on the 20th. Hi Time features a huge walk in beer fridge and just about any beer available in California is stocked in it, yet one tiny mention of beer in their newsletter, the rest is dedicated to wines & liquors. Frustrating

Yeah I see this all the time in restaurants. All of the pasta, steak, and seafood dishes always say what wine you should drink with it never what beer. The only time I ever see recommended food and beer pairings are wings and Miller Lite or something to that effect.

All of those places are in business for one thing. Money. They don't care what specifically they're selling, as long as it's what they can sell the most of. Restaurants and big liquor stores know people want to buy the fancy wine, so who are they to argue with success? I was at a Ruth's Chris steakhouse last night. My wife and I blew $75 on a single bottle of cabernet. Price-wise, that was in about the bottom third of the wine list. But what kind of beer did they have? Guinness and Stella Artois are their luxury beers, with only a few others available. I enjoy wine, but I sure as hell would have gone for a $8 bottle of good beer than that so-so wine. Unfortunately, I'll never expect a steakhouse to serve more than a half dozen varieties of beer because I know 99% of their customers won't even look at 'em. It makes perfect sense to for them. All we can hope for is that sites like this, BA, RB, realbeer, etc. help to change the image of beer (It's not just for bonging anymore!) to give it more pull in the luxury beverage market.
