http://www.iht.com/articles/2005/05/08/business/adcol09.php LONDON -- After a century of disputes, the United States' Anheuser-Busch International and the Czech brewery, Budejovicky Budvar, are in court again. Budvar argues that the name Budweiser has "'protected geographical indication' status." Stephen Burrows, president of Anheuser-Busch International, claims "'there's nothing special about that city...We could make Budweiser Budvar right here in St. Louis, Missouri.'" (Then why don't they?) The breweries both claim rights to the Budweiser trademark. Anheuser-Busch first registered Budweiser in 1876; however, Budvar asserts the Czechs have been brewing it since the thirteenth century. Past court decisions have divided the market. From a 1939 agreement, Budvar is not allowed to sell its product in the United States under the Budweiser name (thanks, Vac). In Germany, Anheuser-Bush is forbidden to use the Budweiser name. Uh, I don't think they completed the statement. It should say the Budvar is not allowed to sell its product under the Budweiser name in the United States. We all know that Czechvar is Budweiser Budvar.

While ago, I posted a URL, with a story of how "Budweiser" was a style of beer once upon a time, and several of the big boys made "Budweiser". You can get US biers here in Europa, I have seen cases of Buttwiper in Bayern, and bottles of Swillers Lowlife here in FUWA. They cost more then Kloster Andechs, but hey! They are imports...!
