5 Paddles Brewing Company is happy to have landed in Whitby! We are all Durham boys so it's good to have a second home that's close to our first homes! This is an especially good thing considering the amount of time we will be spending there! A lot of people ask us where the name 5 Paddles Brewing Company came from. After bantering about potential brewery names for a few weeks, we came up with the name based on all of us having a hand, or mash paddle for that matter, in the brewing process. All five of us are brewers and will be active in the direction of the brewery, the recipes that we create and the actual brewing process and it is for these reasons that we are called 5 Paddles Brewing Company. We are in the process of building our 300 litre/80 gallon/2.5 barrel nanobrewery. Our brewery will be all electric and controlled by a custom-built, state-of-the-art computerized control system designed and built by our friends at Brewmaster Controls. So what's a nanobrewery you may ask? Well, it's basically a small batch brewery (generally under 500 litres per batch) that brews fresh beer and serves it to a small local market. There is a boom in the US currently with somewhere in excess of 350 nanobreweries currently brewing. This boom has now moved into Canada and other parts of the world. In general, nanobrewers are happy to dig in and get their hands dirty so they can save some money in getting up and running and we are certainly no different. Based on the demand for quality craft beer, most nanobreweries grow into microbreweries over time. Due to our small batch size, we have the flexibility to experiment with the types of beer we brew. So, be prepared for lots of different flavours and styles to hit our shelves in the near future! We will have sampling on-site as well as sales of beer, swag and we're working on another little surprise currently that will please our homebrewing friends! So, raise a glass, boot, trophy, helmet, keg, bottle, can or whatever your preferred drinking vessel is and wish us luck on our crazy, fun, scary, exciting journey! Cheers, 5 Paddles Brewing Company
