Wow I get to be the first reviewer for the Trout River Scottish Ale. Pretty cool considering what this beer means to me.
This beer takes me back to my college years at Lyndon State College in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. This beer actually might have been the first real microbrew that I've ever had. Amazing but true! I vividly remember trips to a restaurant in Burke, VT to get my hands on some draft Scottish Ale. It was so good. Now that I have my hands on it again, a good 8 years after I last had some, I get to review it.
The aroma immediately hits the spot for my nose. The smell of smoked malt emanates from the pint glass, bringing back memories from many years ago. A creamy off-white head is evident, but within a minute or two dissolves away. The beer has a nice, clear brown color. It almost looks like Coca Cola, minus the heavy carbonation. In fact, this beer has very little carbonation and drinks very smooth.
I like my Trout River Scottish Ale somewhere around 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit. I think that is the perfect temperature to bring out it's wonderful flavors. It is very similar to what you expect from your typical Scottish ale. Smooth drinking, malty, with a "wee hint of smoke". Nothing crazy and overbearing, just right.
Anyways, if you ever get a chance to get your hands on this beer, I recommend trying it. It's a nice, drink that doesn't pack the punch and have the strength of something like a Skullsplitter.
