Theophan the Recluse was a Russian monk known for the spiritual depth and complexity of his writings. We consider him a perfect namesake for this rich, complex imperial stout, brewed with eight specialty malts, dark Muscovado sugar and a Belgian yeast strain. Deep, mysterious, full-bodied and indefinably exotic, Theophan the Recluse is meant to transport drinkers to a place of deep contemplation, mystical insight and inspired conversation.

Had right after the lighter (abv) Take the Black. This had a noticeable but lesser anise/licorice quality too it. A little sweet, spicy belgian yeast, and a good dose of roast, chocolate and fruit. Smoother than the TTB. I usually don't prefer Belgian imperials, but this is solid. Awesome label.

Comes out of the growler a rich, totally opaque coffee brown with a thick and rather persistent tan head. Malty aroma trots out coffee, chocolate and subtle caramel and licorice notes. Roast malt flavor has an almost candy-like overtone, caramel plus a little chocolate, as well as woody hop, syrupy and earthy notes. Very well-rounded, if a little on the sweet side. Texture is quite thick and viscous, if not overly fizzy. Bold, sweet, worthy - grab it while you can!
