One of those rare instances (for me) where the barreled beer pales in comparison to the base. But for different reasons than usual. Not because the barrel dominates, but because in addition to the light to moderate vanilla and spice from the booze, there is a tartness that leans towards this beer being "bugged"...but without any mention that that was the goal. So this stout, while still good, isn't decadent like most bourbon barrel beers, and not tart enough to be considered wild or sour...just kind of stuck in no man's land. The 12.7 (the bast was 9.7) doesn't show AT ALL. Fairly smooth, even a little thin for the abv. Nice flavors of chocolate and malty goodness under the barrel and lactic tartness. Definitely prefer the cheaper base beer, but this was nice in it's own way.
