In an effort to satisfy the growing demand for gluten-free food and beverages,we've brewed a beer with sorghum which is available on tap at Bottleworks! Schlafly brewers began working on the project over 18 months ago. The new recipe, brewed without malted barley or any gluten-containing products, is made with sorghum, corn, hops, water and gluten-free yeast grown on sorghum syrup. Amber in color with medium bitterness, the beer is 4% alcohol by volume. Christian Artzner, our Quality Manager, led the project development. Christian, who joined us in 2005, has experience brewing in Africa, where sorghum is used extensively in beer production. Local home brewer Sean Sweeney assisted Christian and other Schlafly brewers in designing the recipe and in the development of small-scale production trials. In addition to the new beer, several menu items at Bottleworks are free of gluten or can be prepared in that manner. Diners can request a separate menu listing for their convenience.

By a wide margin, the best Sorghum beer and the best gluten free beer I've had. And, not a bad Blonde Ale, at that. An odd graininess to the aroma, although not unpleasant, coupled with some hop spiciness. Thinner mouthfeel, nice for a blonde, refreshing with moderate carbonation. That odd, sorghum grain flavor (despite the use of syrup) and a satisfying hop bite, it definitely tastes like beer, and a Blonde Ale, at that, and a good Blonde Ale, even. Well done, Sean and Schlafly.
