The gentle rain and fertile soil of Ireland helped inspire this style of ale, known for being remarkably balanced. Pale and Caramel malts give the beer its rich, deep red color and distinctive caramel flavor. The sweetness of the malt is pleasantly balanced by a pronounced hop bitterness and an earthy note from the East Kent Goldings hops. Samuel Adams® Irish Red finishes smooth and leaves you wanting to take another sip. Samuel Adams® Irish Red is our third beer to be deemed "A Beer of the People." It earned this title by winning our 2007 Beer Lover’s Choice® campaign. This was the third time we asked American beer lovers to choose our next brew. Elected by more than 42,000 people across the United States, Samuel Adams® Irish Red is our twist on a classic Irish brew. Originally brewed in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1710, Irish Red Ales are rich in flavor, yet smooth and balanced, making them ideal for warm, sunny days, yet pleasantly cozy during the chilly ones. Samuel Adams® Irish Red is brewed with two-row Harrington, Metcalfe and Caramel 60 malted barley. The Harrington and Metcalfe malted barley provide most of the body and sweet backbone of the beer, while the Caramel 60 contributes to the deep red color that defines the style. To balance all of that sweetness, we use earthy East Kent Goldings and Spalt-Spalter hops. Their subtle bitterness and aroma provide a delicate complexity to the brew.

Deep red color and slightly brownish foam head. Aroma is barley and caramel, taste is distinctive caramel associated with pale barley and yeast. Dry slightly sweet aftertaste. (Houston 201208)

pours a transparent, deep amber/red tone while yielding a small, whispy off-white head with minimal rention and lacing. The aroma is pretty underwhelming with vague maltiness to accompany some light hops and maybe a touch of spice in the background. The taste, fortunately, is an improvement with caramel malts are more evident, as well as some breadiness and a slight touch of hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation.

Amber pour with a medium white head. Nice amount of lace. Not much going on with the aroma. Pleasant balance of hops and malt taste. Definitely worth revisiting.

Interesting red beer. Sharp hop attack, with this blow-cushioning pillow of caramel under it. There is no middle to this beer, it is super sweet and super bitter at the same time; fortunately, the extremity of one is symmetrical to the extremity of the other.

Fall sampler. Pours a dark amber with a big fluffy brown head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is nice. Mouth feel is decent but could have been better. Taste is ever slightly watered down but is plenty hoppy. Overall a decent brew that I will have no trouble drinking again.

I picked this beer up as a mixed six-pack from the Salem Kroger. This beer tasted more like their Boston Lager than what I would expect from an Irish Red. There was a nice malt backbone but I it was a tad over hopped in my opinion. That being said, the beer was quite good.

Good beer, but a little too thick and malty for a red ale IMHO. Pours opaque, frothy and more brown than red. Smells of grain and malt. Mouthfeel is like fizzy molasses. Tasty is grain and lots of malt. Not what I think of when I think of an Irish red, but I can certainly taste the quality ingredients here. Good try, just not a good representative of the style.

Bottled@SBWF2010. Deep reddish amber colour, not that much head. Aroma is lots of caramel malts, some slight floral and wooden hoppyness as well as some mild resiny notes. Flavour is floral and wooden hoppyness with some slight caramel malty notes and also a nice grassy touch in the finish.

Excellent part of Sammy's lineup, this beer impressed me especially for the style. Not overly bold, but very malty with all the right edges. This would fare well for a wide spectrum of beer drinkers.

Deep ruby red, cranberry juie color. Clear. Off white to light tan head with a small amount of lacing. Love this color. The aroma was very earthy and malty. Getting a slight sour smell that is somewhat pleasing. Picked up some caramel and as it warms becomes the dominant aroma. Nice. With the taste, a bit of sour dough with caramel in the background. Some bitterness, but nothing overpowering. The aftertaste is somewhat sour and sticks around on the palated for a moment. Medium mouthfeel with a dry and crisp finish. This is definitely a decent brew in my opinion. It is a nice change, but probably wouldn't want to make this the dominant beer of the evening. Love the color of the beer.
