Samuel Adams Imperial Stout is our take on the traditional Russian Imperial Stouts from the 18th century. English brewers supplied these stouts for the Russian Imperial Court of Catherine the Great, who had taken a great liking to the beer. In order for the beer to survive the long trip to St. Petersburg, the flavor and alcohol needed to be amped up to preserve the beer. While this style originated in England, it is a style now known for being uniquely American as craft Brewers have taken this it to whole new level of flavor and complexity. We think we raised the bar again. Samuel Adams Imperial Stout is a massive beer filled with big, dark flavors. It has been a brewery favorite in recent years and we are exited to share this intense brew with you.

I'm not a fan of the "big box" beer brands but gave this a whirl due to the 9.2 ABV. A friend recommended that I try an Imperial Stoudt and this is what I went with. It pours dark as night and when I held it up to the light couldn't see through it. The mouthful is thick. This sucker is a MALT BOMB! Tough to stomach through more than a couple of these I think. Make sure you're sitting down while you're enjoying this beer. All in all not bad but I'm sure there's better out there.

Bought this 4-pack of 12 fl oz from BevMo. Sam Adams does it again on this Stout! Pours a dark black with a brown head that disappears fast. The aroma is liquorice, some dark dry fruits, mild chocolate and coffee.

Samuel Adams Imperial Series Imperial Stout Sampled on 6/9/2012. This Imperial Stout pours a dark black color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is chocolate, coffee and fruity. A medium to full bodied Imperial Stout. The malts are chocolate, coffee and sweet. The hops are earthy and floral. Nice carbonation. Touch of fruity and cherry at the finish. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Nice Imperial Stout. 4-pack 12-ounce bottles are a great idea, packaging is very nice! High alcohol content, yet it's a smooth-tasting stout. Not an extreme imperial stout taste - the usual coffee/chocolate elements are not on the bitter side in this one - makes this a great choice for the average lager-lover when they're ready to branch out. A good nightcap, too, this one tastes just fine as it settles to room temperature, paired with some pastries. I'm not a fan of Samuel Adam's regular fare - I think they're fine beer crafters, bur their stock ingredients tend to be very tame for my tastes - but this, I consider on par with the best craft beers. Recommended!

The Boston Beer version of the English take on the Imperial Stout, and I think they did a wonderful job. A nice black pour with a creamy head. Lots of roasted malt and coffee in the aroma. Very easy to drink and goes down easy due to chocolate and coffee flavours.

Purchased on my trip to Vegas at the Total Wine store. First of three of the Imperial Series from Sam Adams tonight. Pours a super dark, almost black with no highlights. Light brown creamy head that stays a while and creates chunky lace. Dark fruit scent with mostly plums, then, roasted malts, molasses and hints of nuts. Very creamy mouthfeel with some stick to it. Roasted malt taste with coffee notes in the finish and anise in the aftertaste. A very nice Impy Stout that is quite smooth, but tasty.

Nice apperance pitch black with a small white head. The aroma contains some chocolate, soy sauce, and coffee. Uh oh soy sauce! The flavor is rather bitter with some coffee, chocolate, and still a bit of soy. This reminds me of many british Impy Stout I’ve had. Overall a pretty good beer but not in the league of the big boys of the style.

Easy drinking for an IPS given the ABV closer to 9%. With so many out there though, this one doesn't really stand out. Maybe a too much roastiness or burnt coffee in the malt, followed by some extra bitter in the hops....so basically found the balance to be off. I guess that I prefer my stouts on the sweeter side, unless the balance is right. Appearance is great....jet black with creamy texture and dark mocha head. Glad that I finally got to try...it is a good beer....just will be going other directions in the future. Willing to pay a little extra for better quality.

Bottled@The Chriso rock the roof down pre-GBBF tasting. Quite much pitch black colour with small beigeish brown head. Aroma is liquorice, some dark dry fruits, mild chocolate and coffee as well. Also some slight alcohol. Flavour is dark dry fruits, liquorice, some mild roasted notes as well as chocolate. Not all that bad.

It pours oil-black with a thick and dimpled light-tan head and fairly copious lace. An aroma of chocolate and Yoohoo, espresso, light hops, some yeast, raisin, citrus, and some spices. The mouthfeel is smooth and slightly rich. Flavors of chocolatey malts, hops, citrus, espresso, yeast, raisin, subtle alcohol, and spiciness. Great! There is an alcohol presence, yet they worked around it well with the other flavors.
