Grumpy Monk is a Belgian IPA. The long held brewing traditions of Belgian monks aren’t meant to be broken. Yet, to the monk’s dismay, the distinctive character of Belgian yeast with its spicy clove and fruit notes can be reimagined when combined with the brazen hop character of an IPA. These hops impart a citrusy, piney, and earthy flavor that’s balanced by a roasted malt sweetness for a complex and playful brew.

Comes out of the tap a lovely clear amber with a fairly thick and fine-bubbled pale wheat head. Aroma is more fruity than hoppy, and does have hints of malt and cloves. Flavor, however, is decidedly hoppy and resiny, with woody, fruity and malty notes and hints of pine and clove. Full, robust texture has plenty of fizz and sass. How could anybody be grumpy after one of these?

12 oz bottle. Pours clear light golden orange with a big rocky white head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is some soap (rosemary) with some sweet bready malt and a little piney hop.
The flavor is sweet sugary soapy malts with a big harsh bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.
Overall, an odd sweet soapy spicy IPA. -

Sampled on 7/19/2012. This India Pale Ale pours a medium orange gold color from a 12oz bottle. Medium to large sized white foamy head, with nice retention and good lacing. The aroma is fruity and sweet, touch of banana, some spices and citrusy. A medium bodied India Pale Ale. The malts are fruity and sweet, with a touch of banana and clove. The hops are citrusy and grapefruity. Lively carbonation. Definitely has that Belgian yeast and malts character, and then it has some spices and a whole lot of hops. The hops stick around a while, in the aftertaste and on your teeth. Nice beer. Hope this one make it out to a somewhat regular rotation. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Lookin forward to this, but it ended up pretty mediocre. Fairly tame hopping and abv. Slightly fruity but every aspect is light. Not a whole lot to say about this one. They made a much better Belgian IPA that lost to the red rye in the vote off a couple years ago.

A deep yellow body with orange highlights. The cap is thick and frothy but disappates into a thin ring that leaves some spotty lace.Taste starts with floral and light grassy noble hops, sweet breads, and a bit of earth. The Belgian yeast adds hints of fruit, and clove. The yeast isnt as pronounced as i would have thought, subtle in comparison with other same style beers. Finish is dry with light lingering spiciness.
