A strong ale that starts out sweet and malty with an alcoholic warming in the finish. Very smooth going down but it packs quite a kick.

On the night before Thanksgiving, my wife and her family and friends went to Jines Restaurant in Rochester, NY. I was surprised to see they had some of the Rohrbach beers on draught so I could sample them. The second beer I ordered was the Rohrbach Scotch Ale.

The beer was served in a typical pint glass and had a clear dark amber color to it. There was a light white head on top that stuck around for most of the drink. From the beginning the aroma was very sugary sweet. I was worried about how this would come out in the flavor as I thought the sweetness overshadowed what should have been either some smokey or roasted malts.

My concerns on the flavor were quickly squashed once I had my first sip of the beer. The beer drank fairly well with a light level of carbonation and a warm flavoring to it. I really picked up on the roasted malts that gave off a deeply roasted toffee flavor. Not roasted enough to give off any bitterness though as the beer was still on the sweet side. You could also taste a slight hint of the alcohol content in there.

Overall, I think this was a pretty good brew. It was a little sweeter than what I've had in the past with traditional Scottish Ales and was a little on the disappointed side I didn't pick up on any smokiness. It was a decent brew though.

A good, dark-colored beer that goes down easy... definitely packs a kick. I split 3 pitchers with a pal and we were quite buzzed. Made by a local microbrewer with other good beers to sample as well.

Deep amber color with a thick head. Sweet malty aroma and flavor.
