Old Tom is almost as old as the brewery itself. It was entered into the head brewer's hand-written notebook in 1899, charmingly illustrated with the cat's face. It is a dark and warming superior strong ale, with aromas of dark fruit and a palate booming with ripe malt and hops followed by a deep port wine finish. Over the years Old Tom has won some of the industry's most prestigious brewing awards, and is now recognised as one of the most famous strong ales bred in England. Drink with caution! But most of all ENJOY! Contains malted barley. Best served unchilled.

darker brown pour, wonderfully vinous aroma and flavor with notes of chocolate and loads of dark fruit, toffee and a teeny tiny bit of blacl licorice. Boozy in a good way. Warming finish. Glad I finally tried this.

Really nice dark brown color with huge head which stays on even after an hour of pouring the beer out. Aroma is strongly hoppy and fruity with some hints to chocolate and mint. Taste has notes to sweet and bitter at the same time, dominating cookies and hops and ending with strongly bitter notes. Nice beer.

330 ml capped bottle. Poured in a bollecke goblet a clear and rich burgundy coloured Old Ale with half a finger tan foamy head that had a short retention and tons of micro bubbles. Low carbonation. No lacing. The aroma is toasted malts, dark fruits, raisins, berries, a spicy touch, licorice and vinous notes. The flavour is toasted malts, dark chocolate, spicy, pepper and a vanilla touch, riped fruits, berries, pears and plums and noticeable smoked notes. The mouthfeel is light crispy, fizzy, sparkling and fulled. The texture is oily. This full bodied O A has a dry malty and spicy finish. An impressive, powerful and flavourful, Old Ale with a pleasant warming effect. I like it.

Pours dark reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of caramel, toffee, molasses, raisin, toast, dark bread, light nuttiness, and some earth. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity. Taste of caramel, molasses, toast, dark bread, chocolate, raisin, light nuttiness, earth, toffee, and light herbal spiciness. Nice balance and robustness of flavors. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very good old ale. Nice flavor complexity, robustness, and balance; very smooth to sip on. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Strong, malty aroma has a firm fruity overtone, mainly apple with a hint of banana, and touches of caramel, yeast and - varnish? Actually the latter is not really bad. Pours a dark reddish amber, almost mahogany, with a thick and fluffy pale golden tan head. Very appealing! Flavor has a strong malty core and notes of apple, banana and caramel. That darn varnish-like taste pops up, though. Smooth, firm texture has plenty of fizz and leaves a lasting tingle. Finish is malty and fruity. This ale is the cat's meow!

This beer is hard to describe - it was dark and strong but tasted of plum and cherries. The beer had a unique taste and it was very good. The brew was thick and chewy - legs slowly dripped down the glass. I would agree that it had an oily texture on the palate as described in the comments above.

330 ml bottle, bought in Scarborough. Mahogany coloured beer, large and lasting tan head. Malty sweet aroma, notes of port wine, oak and bakery. Excellent mouthfeel, full and rich. Flavour of generous malts, caramel, dried dark fruits, moderate but noticeable hops (Goldings and Northdown), port wine finish. Fairly sweet, but not cloying. A true classic!

slightly hazy ruby-brown colour, foamy dark beige head; nice lace; notes of prune and a solid biscuity maltiness; full malt body maintained by a good carbonation; robustly bitter, long dry bitter and malty finish with notes of wood and warming alcohol - beautiful !

Dark burgundy red, small biege head. Cherries, black chocolate with a light acidity in aroma. Heavy fruity aroma of cherries and sour raspberries. Strong notes of bitter, dark chocolate. Light oaky character in the finish. Surprisingly light bodied.

Dark amberish ruby red, with bubbly sparkling head. Aroma of alcohol, licorace, some plummy notes. The flavour is sweet at first (plummy) and then get a small hoppy kick, though the plum also stays there. Long sticky sweet fruitish aftertaste. A bit oily palate.
