A malt forward brew, caramel and sweetbread were the predominant flavor and aromas with some grapefruit hops, also some toasted grain, yeasts and a touch of booze in the finish.

Sampled on 6/2/2011. This American Strong Ale pours a slightly cloudy amber brown color from a 22oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet, caramel and slightly spicy. A medium bodied American Strong Ale. The malts are fruity, caramel and sweet. Some candi sugar, molasses and tobacco flavors as well. The hops are earthy and floral. Decent carbonation. Nice balance. A touch on the sweet side as the candi sugar and molasses flavor come out more as the beer warms. Nice sipping beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Yup your right jeff, flat, slightly warm rootbeer, amaretto and coke too..... not much head but nice dark colour. Dry malts, thin watery mouthfeel, not bitter but maybe a touch sweet, licorice allsorts, the pink and black ones. some coffee.... maybe this is an old bottle, it gets alot of high marks for aroma from other people, but despite the wine glass I am drinking from, not getting a whole much. Speaking of such things, slight aroma of wet green cardomon, and a bit of underripe banana, like green banana. It gets a bit more bitter as it warms, and its nice, better than the start.

22oz bombers are always welcome, especially if the beer is good. A dark brown pour, with red edges, and somewhat seethrough. Aroma was full of malt, spices, and nuts. The flavour was bitter malt, and some sweet fruit hints.

Aroma is not strong, but fruity with an undertone of malt and a hint of caramel. It pours a nice dark translucent mahogany with a fairly thick, fine-bubbled, pale tan head that sticks around and leaves a fair amount of lacing. Flavor is fruity and malty with caramel and nutty hints and a whisper of sweetness. Texture is smooth but just a little fizzy, not particularly distinguished. Worthy of at least a try.

In appearance, this one rates as the best so far of the Pike series. A brown ale with reddish ting. Big creamy textured light beige head rises above. Good hang time and very impressive lacing. Nose is yeasty and malty. Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Spicy (coriander), sugary, yeasty all complex in the flavors. Really pretty good.

in addition to Sap's detailed review (i agree with the sweetness factor, but it IS a pretty nice smooth malty beer) it has candy sugar and belgian ale yeast in it as well, to lend a further level of complexity and yuminess. very bready and sweet, but the hops aren't totally overpowered. good beer.

Fresh release from liquid solutions A vigorous pour into my 25cl tulip glass produces a four-finger thick, frothy, fairly dense, amber tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a dark, burnt amber color that shows a clear, cranberry hue when held up to the light. Sticky, sweet, caramelized malt aromas are noticeable as I pour this brew and a more focused look at the nose tempers this nicely with lots of toasted malt and browned whole grain bread notes. This is definitely heavily focused on caramelized malt, but there seems to be a touch of herbal / citrus hop character just noticeable underneath the heavy malt. There is a soft, toasted nuttiness here towards the end of the aroma. There is also a fair amount of caramelized, berry fruit notes in the nose.
Rich and creamy up front, sweet malt dominates as it starts to move across the tongue, but a herbal, lightly biting bitterness actual comes in to play and lingers on a bit in the finish (surprisingly for only 25 listed IBUs, though definitely on the light side). The finish really ends with some toasted, whole grain leaning, almost grain husk notes that can't quite dry out the up front sweet malt. Some berry, or sweet raisin notes get wrapped up in the caramelized malt sweetness that is prominent in this beer and there is a soft, but noticeable, grapefruit-leaning citrus character here towards the middle. A touch of almost roasted grain towards the finish can at times taste a bit nutty, but definitely adds a solid toasted whole grain bread character to this beer. While this definitely has a body to it, I like that it has a certain creaminess to it without being overly heavy, it even manages to have a certain quaffable quality to it. As the beer warms up the malt begins to smooth out / over-take the bitterness.
Not a bad beer, you definitely need to enjoy a crystal malt balanced / focused brew, and this does have a touch of malt astringency to it, but it is actually pretty decent.

This brew poured a hazy dark brown with a nice sized tan colored with very good retention with fair lacing. The aroma was sweet malts, roasted nuts, coffee and brown sugar with a very mild spice from the hops. The taste sweet malts with a hint of spice, chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel was medium. Overall a very delightful brew.
