Olde Burnside Ten Penny Ale

On draft at a Dakota's steakhouse in the Hartford area. Poured amber-copper in color, looked like a regular old amber ale (was expecting dark Scottish ale). The aroma was hoppy, citrus and pine, caramel, bread. The flavor was lighter than a dark scottish ale with caramel and bready malts the feature, finishing hoppy, slight grass elements too. Mouthfeel was moderate-heavy for an amber type ale, the malts plentiful.

Wow, who would have thought I'd find this gem at the local dive in my old home town. The place only has about 8 beers on tap and I had to try this since I had never heard of it before. It was darn good! A great tan head on the dark brown beer warned me that I was in for a treat. A little bit of smokey, caramel sweetness that's balanced with a nice amount of hops makes it a very drinkable beer with some fairly complex flavor. Many Scottish ales are a little too sweet for me and make it difficult to drink more than one or two. Unfortunately, the darn sixtel kicked while pouring my second glass! I was so depressed.

Sampled from store-bought growler. This pours a dark amber color with a generous beige head. Aroma is malty, piney, hoppy, with a slight smoky scent. This one has an interesting hop profile, that I enjoyed very much. Grassy, piney, citrussy hops, intermingled with a sweet malty taste. A very well balanced brew, and a personal favorite. I only wish this would be bottled in six packs.

Ten Penny Ale poured a great thick pure white head. A strong smell of hops and hay. The smell and taste is truly unique and is something im not accustomed to. Semi hazy amber with specs floating about. Fat, tight, tiny bubbled off white head. Light carbonation. Aroma of caramel, grassy hops and very light peat. Very very light smoky flavor. Fairly dry. Mellow and light bodied. Easy drinking with a mild undertow of sweetness. A very light citric edge to the aftertaste.
