Aged for four months in bourbon barrels from the Buffalo Trace distillery in Kentucky, the Bourbon Barrel Stout is a robust yet balanced beer. Roasted malts give it a chocolate and coffee overtone, and the oak creates hints of vanilla and caramel. At 10.5% ABV, this stout pairs well with smokey barbeque sauce or even rich desserts.

big bottle .. Pours a light brown .. light spotty lacing .. low foam head .. . maple syrup, light sweet tar, and a touch tart .. . wow, very weak mouth .. . clearly has a spot of infection .. no thanks .. . . If God dwells inside us like some people say, I sure hope He likes enchiladas, because that's what He's getting..

last year's batch was eclipse black?? well, despite being a stronger beer this year (11.5) it poured darkish brown. pretty light in body too, especially for an impy. the alcohol was evident, perhaps a little too much, in the aroma, but it was still a very pleasant booziness. the beer was a little too thin to make much of an appearance through the barreling. some light roast, chocolate, coffee, and lots o bourbon. you'll notice my score is still pretty high, but that is more indicative that this is a style i just love, so even a "bad" one is good. this is probably the lowest i've ever scored a barreled impy stout (and upon review, the lowest of 5 Odell ratings to this point, though this is my favorite style).

Sampled on 11/6/2010. This Imperial Stout pours an eclipse black color from a 750ml bottle. Medium sized tan foamy head, with nice lacing and good retention. Aroma is bourbon, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, oak and roasty malt. Medium to full bodied Imperial Stout. The malts are roasty, chocolate, coffee and sweet. The hops are herbal and earthy. Good carbonation. Nice bourbon flavors, they mix and match with the wood and earthiness of the stout. Lots of bourbon in the nose and taste. Very smooth. Nicely balanced. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and a touch dry. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
