Bottle: poured a viscous murky particulate ridden rust colored ale in the glass ( there were chunks in mine ) – looks like lager and TJ – yuck! Aroma like spoiled unfiltered apple juice. Excessive sweetness, alcohol is badly hidden, no way to tell if there is any complexity because the brew is so hot with alcohol….a Viking brew…go find a Viking to sell this to…I’m unimpressed as both a home brewer and a reviewer. This is better marketed as a natural laxative. What a rip off for 22 bucks!

An expensive 600ml bottle found at the LCBO, but being barleywine, understandable. Pours a dark brown colour with ruby highlights. The head is light brown, fizzy, and does not stay long like most higher alcohol beers. Nice molasses aromas with dark fruits, like plums, prunes and also notes of nuts. Full-bodied wet mouthfeel with no burning at all. Interesting flavours with caramel, dark fruits, hints of coffee, nuts and light vanilla. At the last pour, the brew got murky looking like swamp water (or chocolate milk) and some mild chocolate came out of it. Quite a good barleywine and like most, harder to drink at first, but gets much easier as you go. And I could take more of this.

I had this beer at the Nørrebro Bryghus brewery on Jan. 19, 2011 in Copenhagen Denmark. This beer was easily one of the best in the bar filled with many good beers. The beer was heavy, warming, and rich. Yummy!

Pours with a deep red-brown body topped by a thin head wtih some lacing. It’s sweet and malty with a note of caramel, and some alcohol esters. Full bodied, smooth and a touch warming.

courtesy of Papsoe - pours a cloudy brown colour with a little foam; aroma of prunes with some cookie maltiness and caramel; very malty, sticky and quite sweet; fairly bitter but not enough to balance the sweetness; the finish is very malty with notes of red fruits and a warming alcohol touch added to some residual sugars - a solid though to sweet barley wine

Cloudy brown, no head to mention. Sweet flowery aroma, hints of red berries and spices. Sweet fruity flavour of lemon, pear and peach with oily hops. Long, sweet warming finish of berries.

Draught at the brewpub, RBESG. Fresh and aged versions. I liked the fresh one better, so my ratings are for that one. Comments aged version: Cloudy brown colour, decent head. Yeasty and strong wort aroma, smells kind of "unfinished / immature". (5/10) Flavour is worty sweet, again "unfinished / immature". (5/10) Not my favourite this one. Overall 11/20. Comments fresh version: Cloudy brown colour. Aroma is malty and "fresher" than the aged one, fruity elements. Some oaky notes too. Flavour is malty / worty sweet - too sweet. Still better than the aged one.
