Black as night and every bit Imperial, this RIS was originally launched to tremendous accolades. Going further, this Stranahan’s Whiskey barrel aged version meshes the rich chocolates, the coffee-like aromatics with the sweet whiskey nose and drying character of the oak. Slightly behind on the palette are the hops – held in restraint by the wonderfully full mouthfeel and broad flavors brought on by the perfect blend of so many malted barley varieties. Ready to enjoy upon release and perfect for extended cellaring. Reserve Series #2.

Bottle - 750mL crowned. Black pour with a tall, fluffy tan head. Vanilla, roasted malt, dark chocolate and licorice int he nose. Taste is roasted malt, molasses, dark fruit, vanilla, licorice and dark chocolate. Soft oak notes as well. Body is medium with a strong, bubbly carbonation. Ends with more molasses, dark fruit, vanilla, roasted malt, burnt caramel and dark chocolate.

Starts out incredibly smooth and balanced. Roasted malts, chocolate, and the obvious but not overpowering whiskey presence. Like the other Nebraska barrel projects, super smooth. The only thing preventing a 4.5 here is a little heat in the flavor as the beer warms, but it is approaching world class even so.

I've been saving this for a special occasion - and since now U.S. women can serve in combat roles, I think that's worth a toast! So, on to this here now brewski. Strong roast malt aroma has an oaky and whisky overtone, obviously from the barrel aging; it has notes of chocolate and caramel as well. Comes out of the bottle a rich sable just a whisker above jet black with a very thick and rather persistent tan head. Robust and rich flavor has firm tones of roast malt, chocolate, quality coffee, oaked whisky and licorice - may be whispers of toffee and horehound in there, too. Firm, smooth texture has some good fizz and leaves a smoky texture with a strong but not vicious whisky bite. Whoa Black Betty, bam-a-lam...

Attractive, if thin, black pour and a healthy brown head. Strong aromas of earthy malts and fruit accompany a slight whiskey tinge. Very nice Flavors of bakers chocolate, oak, and vanilla with a nice thick mouthfeel. This bottle had been in my cellar for 1+ years and has really evolved. It's messy fresh but very nice with age. The whiskey is subdued but still lends a nice blend to the deep roasted malts.

Sampled from bottle thanks to Dan and Tim. Pours opaque black-brown with a sudsy tan head and nice lace. Cocoa and oak (vanilla) nose. Bitterness from the oak tannins. Strong, dark fruit. Full-bodied. I'd enjoy it more if the oak/bourbon were more subtle. Worth trying!
