Monteith’s Black Beer is in a league of its own in the heritage of very dark West Coast beers brewed prior to restrictions imposed on beers in New Zealand during World War II. By today’s standards, Monteith’s Black Beer is distinctive, with a higher alcohol content than ‘mainstream’ beers and a crisp dark maltiness. This complex malty characteristic shines through from the use of five different premium malts. With biscuit, nutty, caramel, chocolate and coffee malt characteristics, it’s a special taste in beers that is truly akin to the rich black beers historically produced on the West Coast of New Zealand. Monteith’s brewers have developed traditional yeasty fermentation characters through which they meld berry-fruit notes with the aroma of this complex blend of malts.

Bottled (from bierzwerg.de). Rubyish brown colour, mediumsized off-white head that leaves some lace. Aroma is malty, some roasted malts, mild toffeeish notes as well as some ashes and mild dark dry fruity notes. Flavour is roasted malts, some ashes, mild chocolate, raisins and a quite bitter finish.

Sampled on 1/9/2011. This schwarzbier pours a medium to dark black color from a 30cl bottle. Small to medium sized beige foamy head, with decent retention and good lacing. The aroma is roasty, fruity and sweet. A medium to light bodied schwarzbier. The malts are roasty, fruit and sweet. The hops are earthy. Decent carbonation. The beer is perhaps a touch sweet and perhaps a little thin in the mouth. Still, there is a nice roasty, smoky quality in this beer. A nice very easy drinking dark beer. Mouthfeel is a full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Fairly average schwarzbier. Pours a nice deep ruby brown with pretty good lacing. Aroma is mostly malty caramel with a touch more roast and a bit of nuttiness in the flavor. I guess if schwarzbier is your thing then you’ll like this one. For me, it’s all a tad thin and uninteresting and doesn’t quite stand up to American and German versions.
