This is my first brew from Kern River. I bought a growler from the Brewery and enjoyed it lake side at Lake Isabella. I thought it was a good beer for stout. It pour with a very dark, black color with a tan, very small head.

at 8.5%...on th light side for an imperial, but that's sooo not the point with this beer. it's a super flavorful aromatic stout, and smells and tastes textbook for what an american stout is supposed to be. pours near black, but light can get through. I could smell the roast, coffee, and hops as soon as i popped the top. same as the flavor, but the taste has a hint of cocoa and dark fruit in the background too. smooth. hides the % well. quality beer! thanks to jlozier for this one.

Mrs Kern was my 7th grade Math teacher, what a bitch! .. . Pours dark brown with low fluffy head, spotty lacing .. . light coffee, grape, and cooking chocolate- one dimensional but still quite enjoyable .. . I know what we gon do, we gon take THEM to the Mo-BU, and let THEM explain to HER, that way SHE gon understand that WE gon be cool and THEY gon be exactly where we is!

I was given the chance to taste this from a growler my buddy brought back from the brewery. deep black color with thin head like soap bubbles that didn't last very long. Tastes like a sweet oatmeal stout at first, but quickly merges into a bittersweet chocolate. LOTS of bittersweet chocolate. Then a bit of bitter hops in the finish into aftertaste. I thoroughly enjoyed this and wished I could have had more. 6-11-11: Has a special cask one-off release of this from the brewery. They changed the recipe slightly by adding vanilla into the mix. I didn't feel the need to add it as a separate beer because they may very well never make it again. It is still very much the same beer, but a lot smoother and a bit sweeter. Slightly warm brandy-ish alcohol finish. Some dark cherry -wood?- in the flavor as well. Totally made the drive down there worthwhile.

This beer poured with a black color and a beige head. The aroma consisted of chocolate, coffee, and some dark fruits. The flavor was only slightly sweet, more sour I thought, with some grapes, coffee, raisins, and coffee. The mouthfeel was sweet and "carbonation" as I wrote. Overall a decent stout.
