The “Uncharted Waters” Series by Heavy Seas Beer will soon welcome its newest addition, PLANK III. As the third offering of the PLANK series, this limited summer release will be available from July to August in all 18 states where Heavy Seas Beer is distributed. In 2011, we began the PLANK project. In brief, the goal was to influence the flavor profile of beer using woods that have rarely, if ever, been used in aging beer before. PLANK I was an “olde style” English Ale aged on kilned Poplar wood planks. PLANK II in 2012 was a German style Doppelbock aged on a combination of Poplar and Eucalyptus wood. Aged on Jamaican Allspice wood and featuring pepper and fruit flavors, PLANK III offers a unique taste and aroma. According to Christopher Leonard, Brewmaster and Operations Manager, “PLANK III is an exciting Belgian-style Tripel. We believe it is the first commercially available beer that has been aged on Jamaican Allspice wood. Goldenrod in color with a dense head and creamy mouthfeel, this robust, bold brew presents phenolic flavors of white pepper and peach skin from the warm fermentation along with subtle spiciness from the wood aging.” Style: Belgian Tripel ABV: 8.5% Availability: July – August Hops: Styrian Aurora, German Smaragd Malts: Pale, 2-Row. German Munich Malt Suggested Food Pairings: Strong, pungent semi-soft and semi-firm cheeses, anything

Pours clear honey-amber with a thick buff head. Malty aroma has a note of fresh-cut wood and hints of clove, yeast, and banana. Flavor is bolder, getting your attention with woody, malty, yeasty, and banana notes plus bits of clove and hops. Sweet from malt and fruit notes does not quite balance the woody/hoppy bitterness, but sometimes asymmetry is a good thing. Viscosity and fizz are average, but finish is distinctive, with woody and banana notes plus a hint of clove. Walk this plank, matey!

A bright orange amber colored beer with a small, three fingered sudsy textured off white head rising above. A short lived hang time on the head. A moderate ringlet and persistent cap are left. A light spiced, fruity nose. More of that deeper in the taste. The allspice is definitely out there. Light.
