Beer style: Russian Imperial Stout Brewed with Locally Roasted Coffee Our quest to brew the quintessential coffee beer began over a cupping with the coffee gurus from Richmond’s Lamplighter Roasting Company. Their Ethiopia Sidamo coffee was masterfully roasted to highlight the single origin bean’s bright, crisp body and distinctive blueberry undertones, making it harmonize beautifully with our Russian Imperial Stout. May this beer warm your spirits in these brisk winter months. Best with: Hardywood Sidamo Coffee Stout pairs masterfully with pastries, with spiced doughnuts and with all manner of sweet cakes. The roast chocolate character in Sidamo Coffee Stout embraces sweet cream- or chocolate-based desserts, while the beer’s pleasant city roast coffee bitterness provides a harmonious contrast. Perhaps the perfect complement to Sidamo Coffee Stout would be a Belgian waffle with warm chocolate sauce and a side of whipped cream and berries. Availability: Late winter Package: Draft, Bottles, Cask Category: Reserve Series beer First release date: January 2013

Pours coffee brown with a nice buff head. Aroma features coffee, woody hop, toasted malt and coffee notes. Flavor delivers sweet mocha, roasted malt and molasses tones - delicious as all-get-out. Mouthfeel offers firm body and sassy fizz. Get yer coffee!

Out for a night with Alexandria Brew Crewers and focused on dark. I thought the bartender had confused the Southern Tier Creme Brulee with the Hardywood Sidamo Coffee Stout, and I was right, so I've switched the reviews. This was the color of black coffee with a dense and persistent ring. Good char aroma. The flavor is similar: there is some sweet milk to it, but also char and smoke. It's not especially sweet or bold, but it is boozy. Good body but not too heavy, mild tingle. UPDATE WITH NEW NUMBERS: From the bottle this is practically black with a persistent layer of dense foam across the top. Strong boozy bourbon aroma takes a front seat. Coffee, char, bourbon, maybe a hint of cocoa. Sweetness is folded into bourbon bourbon bourbon. Makes me want to sing Jack Kerouac and Walker Percy into loud jazz, scatting some Siddhartha and Servais Pinckaers in the mix. Bolder and sweeter than remembered. Soft tingle, mostly heavy velvet.
