This one is a solid ale, but very safe, very tame. When I pay 12 dollars for a pint, I expect a funky, risk-taking drink. This one is just a better-than-average strong ale. The beer label shows an overexaggerated warrior (Odin) eyeing up his goblet of overflowing ale. Slightly stylish text on the label, too. So effort was put into making the label a little sexy. Not a good idea. I prefer straightforward, honest labels. Trappistes Rochefort, there you go... Like I said, A solid ale. I've had this a few times. Bought once, and gotten from friends on occasion. I can't even recall the flavors because it's so middle-of-the-road for its price range. But good beer. Just don't pay more than $7.00 for the pint bottle. It's not worth more than that in my opinion. You can get a Trappistes Rochefort for a little more, in a smaller bottle, and you get your money's worth.

What a freaking awesome bier! Had this at my family's house last week and it blew everyone's mind. Pours a motor oil black into the glass. No head or carbonation what so ever. Aroma is so smokey, earth and the sludge at the botom of your coffee pot when it's been sitting there for a while. But it's beautiful. Sludge in a good way! Taste is knock you in the ass strong. Hotty hot pants. Intense. And Delcious.

Bottled. Quite much opaque black colour, not much head. Aroma is caramel, sugar, strong alcohol, liquor and some wood. Flavour is quite much the same. Some chocolate also. Quite strong alcoholic and liquoriceish sweet notes.

man, this was a complex brew. tasted and smelled barreled...chocolate, coffee, tar, mollases, hops, roasted malt. super good, super smooth. smoke in the aroma and flavor. 11% not detectable!

Pours a rich black sable with a dark tan head - what I got was rather thin, but this was an artifact of the way it was poured. I'm sure a first pour would have yielded a nice thick head. Aroma fills the nose with rich chocolate, fine coffee, and nutty and molasses hints. Excellent flavor is like a high-quality mocha, fine chocolate and high-quality coffee; it is sweet but not cloying with nutty and molasses undertones. Texture is thick, smooth, oily and fizzy, leaving a tingly and slightly sweet finish. A real winner!

16.9 oz bottle, batch 210 brewed on 2001.09. Pours a dark opaque black with a smallish dark brown head that goes to a thin film that retains and laces the glass.

The aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, black licorice, dark fruits and alcohol.

The flavor is roasted malts, black licorice, alcohol and a little coffee and dark fruits with a pretty big charred bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth creamy carbonation.

Overall, for the first couple of sips, I thought it was too over the top with too much alcohol and charred bitterness. But as I drank the rest of the bottle, it smoothed out and the flavors blended better and weren't as abrasive. In the end, I liked it. It's a bit pricey for a regular buy though at $10 a bottle.

Sampled on 4/2/2010. Batch 210. This Imperial Stout pours a very dark black color from a 500ml bottle. Very dark , large sized beige foamy head, with nice lacing and decent retention. The aroma is chocolate, coffee, roasty malt, cheery and dark fruit. A medium to full bodied Imperial Stout. The malts are roasty, chocolate and semi-sweet. The hops are earthy. Nice balance. Good carbonation. There is a lot of fruitiness here as well as a very nice roasted malt character. Wonder if the fruitiness is due to the wild yeast. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

dark as midnight in a black factory .. . lots of dark evil fruits and light papercuts of smoke .. . dark chocolate raisins and odd coffeepot jazz (light funk) in mouth, soupa smooth for the 11% tag.. . different yet uniquely familiar! kudos!

500 ml bottle, batch #195, from Vinmonopolet. ABV is 11.0%. Pitch black colour, one of the darkest beers I’ve ever seen. Chocolate brown medium-sized creamy head, does not last forever. Unusual aroma of dark malts, coffee, chocolate, liquorice, prunes - some vinous notes too. The mouthfeel is first surprisingly light for such a strong and dark beer, probably due to the acidity. The flavour is very acidic and lemony, which is crashing completely with the other flavour elements: smoke, tar, coffee, liquorice. I’m sorry, but adding wild yeast to this brew was not a good idea. Without the wild yeast it would have been a great beer, now it’s too much on the weird side. Nice try, but won’t buy again.
